- #1 Used Kia e-Niro / Niro EV (€15–21k, 64 kWh) — deepest family-EV parc, transferable Kia 7-year vehicle warranty remaining, CCS.
- #2 Used VW ID.3 (€16–21k / Mk1 Pure often €18–22k) — Golf-size hatch; buy only with software updated; odo has a 4-year Irish ownership story.
- #3 Used Tesla Model 3 (SR+ €19–24k · LR €24–32k) — Supercharger network + efficiency; inspect trim wear and 12V age.
- #4–5 Kona Electric 64 kWh (€17–22k) and ID.4 77 kWh (€22–28k) — volume Irish family EVs; verify Kona recall / ID.4 heat pump.
- #6–8 Early EV6 / Ioniq 5 (€28–35k, ICCU homework), Leaf (budget caveat), MG4 (€19–29k classic).
- No SEAI purchase grant on used — see EV grants. Home-charger grant can still apply.
- Before you pay: live SoH + MotorCheck + 12V age — full process in the used EV buying guide.
Why used EVs make sense in Ireland in 2026
The steepest part of EV depreciation already happened. After sharp 2023–2024 falls, used-EV values moved only about 2.8% year-on-year through late 2025 — and some models (Model 3, Ioniq 5, EV6) have firm floors. You still get €120 flat motor tax, night-rate home electricity at a fraction of petrol, and years of HV battery warranty left on 2019–2023 cars. What you do not get is the new-car SEAI purchase grant — price that into the comparison vs a new Inster / Spring / MG4 Urban on our Best EVs in Ireland list.
- Price: used EVs ~11% under equivalent diesels on Irish listings
- Warranty runway: many 2020–2022 cars still have 2–4 years of 8/160/70 pack cover
- Charging maturity: CCS is the public default; CHAdeMO is the Leaf / Japanese-import trap
- Risk: SoH, 12V, software and ICCU-era E-GMP cars — manageable if you check
This page vs the Used EV Buying Guide
Used EV Buying Guide Ireland is the process playbook: State of Health (Leaf Spy / Car Scanner / Tesla report), warranty maths, UK/Japanese VRT, charging-port check, 10-point checklist and red flags.
This listicle ranks which used models to shortlist at August 2026 DoneDeal/Carzone money — with ownership-review deep links for new-model context. Read both: pick a car here, then run the checklist there (and battery-risk maths in EV Battery Replacement Ireland).
The 8 picks ranked
Ranked for a typical Irish private buyer with off-street home charging, 12,000–20,000 km/yr, wanting CCS and usable winter range. Adjust if you are kerb-only (public charging destroys the TCO case), rural with thin dealer coverage (MG / Tesla service), or strictly sub-€12k (Leaf territory with caveats).
Used Kia e-Niro / Niro EV
Deep Irish parc · 7-yr Kia warranty remaining- Battery
- 64 kWh usable-class (earlier 39 kWh exists — avoid for only-car)
- Range
- ~350 km real mild · ~280–300 km Irish winter typical at healthy SoH
Default used family EV in Ireland. Bigger boot than first-gen Kona Electric (~451 L), CCS, heat-pump cars are common on European-spec stock, and Kia's 7-year / 150,000 km vehicle warranty is transferable with intact dealer service — a 2020 car in 2026 can still carry factory cover that props DoneDeal liquidity. HV pack separately 8 yr / 160k / 70%.
ICCU / 12V charging faults appear on some later E-GMP siblings more than e-Niro, but still verify charge history. High-mileage cars can burn the 150,000 km vehicle-warranty cap before calendar year 7. Confirm SoH via Car Scanner / Kia dealer printout — target 85%+.
Used Volkswagen ID.3
Golf-size hatch · odo 4-year Irish ownership story- Battery
- 52 / 58 / 77 kWh depending on year
- Range
- Pure ~250–320 km real · Pro 77 kWh ~350–450 km mild
Best used hatchback EV once software is current. Full VW dealer footprint, CCS, strong parts availability. Our own 2021 Pure Performance (150 PS / 58 kWh) ownership review covers real Irish range, service costs and what actually failed — useful calibration before you buy a Mk1.
Early 2020–2022 software and cheap plastics were real pain points; insist on OTA / Software 3.x currency or discount hard. 12V auxiliary failures are common around year 2–4 (€100–€200). Prefer heat-pump cars for Irish winters. Dealer VCDS / printout beats a screenshot.
Used Tesla Model 3
#2 EV new sales halo · Supercharger access- Battery
- SR+ ~54–60 kWh class · LR ~75–82 kWh
- Range
- SR+ ~320–400 km real · LR ~400–480 km mild / ~340 km winter ballpark
Long-distance used pick. Supercharger network (now open to non-Teslas via app, but native Tesla still smoothest), class-leading efficiency, OTA updates keep older cars feeling current. Highland (2023+) cars sit above this band — pre-Highland is the value play.
Tesla service is Cork + Sandyford (plus mobile vans) — thin vs VW/Hyundai/Kia. Interior wear and panel-gap stories on early builds; inspect seats, console and suspension arms. Phantom drain ~1%/day parked is normal. Ask for Tesla Service battery health report. 12V still fails.
Used Hyundai Kona Electric
Top Irish used-EV volume seller- Battery
- 39 kWh early / 64 kWh sweet spot
- Range
- 64 kWh ~320–380 km mild · ~280–320 km winter typical
Compact crossover packaging with Hyundai dealer density in every county. 64 kWh cars are the used sweet spot; CCS; often cheaper than equivalent e-Niro for similar miles. Strong second-car / school-run / 40 km commute machine.
Battery recall campaign on older packs — verify completion by VIN before you buy. Smaller boot than e-Niro. 39 kWh cars are urban-only in Irish winter. Same 12V homework as every EV over four years old.
Used Volkswagen ID.4
#1 Irish EV new sales · family SUV body- Battery
- 52 / 77 / 82 kWh — 77 kWh Pro is the target
- Range
- 77 kWh ~400–470 km mild · ~320 km winter without heat pump worse
Default used family SUV EV. Space, towing on some trims, VW service network residual tailwind. If you need height and boot over hatch efficiency, skip the ID.3 and start here.
Heat pump often optional — missing it costs winter range. Software glitches linger even post-update; confirm OTA date. Heavier tyre wear than ICE. Price band overlaps early EV6 — decide on dealer preference vs 800V charge speed.
Used Kia EV6 / Hyundai Ioniq 5 (early)
800V E-GMP · holding value in 2026- Battery
- Pre-facelift EV6 ~77.4 kWh · Ioniq 5 73/77 kWh class
- Range
- ~400–450 km mild · 10–80% DC often ~18 min on healthy 800V hardware
Step-up used buys when budget clears €28k and you want blistering DC charging plus cabin space. Values have stabilised / slightly firmed — you are past the crash. Kia 7-year vehicle warranty remaining on EV6 is a real residual plus.
ICCU / 12V charging failures on early E-GMP cars are mandatory homework — documented recall remedy or walk away. Grey imports and incomplete software history are red flags. Full process: Used EV Buying Guide + model reviews.
Twin context: Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ireland for the living-space sibling — same platform risks and the same SoH / ICCU checklist.
Used Nissan Leaf (budget caveat)
Cheapest entry · CHAdeMO + degradation honesty- Battery
- 24 / 30 / 40 / 62 kWh — SoH varies wildly by rapid-charge history
- Range
- 40 kWh ~200 km summer / ~150 km winter at ~90% SoH · 24 kWh often 100–140 km winter
Strict budget / second-car / short commute when CCS money is not available. Leaf Spy Pro + OBD dongle is the gold-standard buy tool. Refurbished 40 kWh packs (€7–9k) are the cheapest HV replacements in Ireland if you inherit a tired pack — still often uneconomic vs buying a healthier car.
CHAdeMO public network is phasing down vs CCS. Japanese imports lack European cold-weather packs (winter range can drop another 25–35%) and need nav/Bluetooth conversion. Rapidgate thermal throttling on back-to-back DC charges on 40 kWh. Below ~80% SoH, negotiate hard or leave.
Used MG4
Value hatch · 7-year MG warranty story- Battery
- ~51 / 64 / 77 kWh class on classic · LFP on newer Urban (mostly still new)
- Range
- SR ~280–350 km real · LR higher — confirm heat pump on used VIN
Sharp driver's hatch at used money, CCS, MG 7-year / 150,000 km cover on post-2021 registrations when servicing is correct. Good alternative when e-Niro / ID.3 stock is thin in your county.
MG dealer footprint still thinner outside major cities; residuals lag Hyundai/Kia/VW. Infotainment lag and software update history matter. Do not confuse classic RWD MG4 with new FWD Urban on the used market — different cars. See model brief before you click Buy.
Budget tiers — DoneDeal / Carzone bands (Aug 2026)
Indicative private-listing ranges for clean Irish-market cars. Imports, write-offs and high-SoH outliers sit outside these bands.
Under €15,000
- Nissan Leaf 40 kWh (€10–15k) — usable short-range if SoH ≥85% and you accept CHAdeMO
- Leaf 24/30 kWh (€3–7k) — city / second car only; Japanese imports need extra diligence
- Renault Zoe 50 / BMW i3 120 Ah (€8–13k) — confirm Zoe battery is bought not leased; i3 is premium cabin, awkward doors
- Reality check: winter range and public-charge friction dominate this band — home charging essential
€15,000–€25,000
- Kia e-Niro / Niro EV 64 kWh (€15–21k) — #1 pick in this guide
- VW ID.3 58 kWh (€16–21k) — software-updated only
- Hyundai Kona Electric 64 kWh (€17–22k) — recall verified
- Tesla Model 3 SR+ (€19–24k) — long-distance option
- MG4 classic 2023–24 (€19–29k straddles this and the next band)
€25,000–€35,000
- VW ID.4 77 kWh (€22–28k core; nicer cars into low €30ks)
- Tesla Model 3 Long Range (€24–32k)
- Kia EV6 Earth / Hyundai Ioniq 5 (€28–35k) — ICCU documentation mandatory
- Alternative: stretch to a nearly-new grant-eligible hatch on Best EVs Ireland if warranty-from-zero matters more than pack size
Used BEVs do not qualify for the €3,500 SEAI purchase grant. Factor that when comparing a €22k used ID.3 to a ~€20k effective new Spring / Inster. Wallbox support via SEAI home-charger grant can still apply — details in SEAI EV Grants Ireland.
Irish-specific quirks (do not skip)
- CHAdeMO phase-down — Leaf and many Japanese imports lose public rapid options as ESB / Applegreen / Weev go CCS-first. Prefer CCS unless the Leaf discount is huge.
- 12V auxiliary battery — #1 Irish EV roadside callout. Replace at 4–5 years or when the seller cannot prove a recent change.
- Early ID.3 software — Mk1 cars without current OTA feel broken; facelift / updated cars transform the product.
- Kona battery recall — VIN check before deposit.
- E-GMP ICCU — EV6 / Ioniq 5 early cars need documented remedy.
- UK / Japanese imports — 7% VRT on OMSP + possible VAT/customs; Japanese Leafs often lack heat pumps. Process in the used EV buying guide and general paperwork in Buying a Used Car in Ireland.
- Winter range — plan 65–70% of WLTP on cold mornings; heat pump is worth hunting on the equipment list.
Battery & vehicle warranty remaining — quick map
| Model | HV pack (typical) | Extra vehicle cover | Used buyer note |
