About odo.ie

Why we built odo.ie

odo.ie started with a simple observation: every Irish driver we knew was managing their car the same way — a mix of paper letters, dashboard stickers, half-remembered dates, and the occasional jolt of panic when something almost slipped through. NCT. Motor tax. Insurance renewal. Oil change. Timing belt. Tyres. None of it joined up. All of it expensive when missed.

We looked at what was on the market and found the same gap everywhere. Generic American apps assumed miles, gallons, and a vehicle inspection regime that doesn't exist here. The few "tracker" apps that were Irish-friendly hid the basics behind a subscription, or asked you to plug a dongle into your OBD port just to log a fill-up. Nothing did the obvious thing — track your NCT, your tax, your insurance, your services and your costs in one place, in euros and kilometres, for free.

So we built it. odo.ie is designed around how car ownership actually works in Ireland: the right NCT intervals, the right tax cycles, the right units, the right reminders at the right time. Built by Irish drivers for Irish drivers, with no second guessing required.

The problem with car ownership in Ireland

Owning a car in Ireland means juggling a surprising number of deadlines and decisions. NCT every two years (or every year once your car hits ten). Motor tax — monthly, quarterly, or annually. Insurance renewal. Oil changes every 15,000 km. Full services. Brake pads. Timing belts. Tyres.

And yes — technically, you do get reminders. The NCTS sends a letter (and an optional email if you've opted in). Motor Tax Online posts an RF100B renewal form about three weeks before your tax expires. Your insurer sends a renewal notice 30 days out. Your garage sticks a little sticker on the windscreen. Your car's dashboard lights up with a wrench icon.

But here's the thing: none of these systems talk to each other. The NCT letter gets buried under bills. The tax form arrives with a PIN you can't find when you need it. The insurance renewal auto-renews at a higher price because you didn't shop around in time. The garage sticker? You stopped noticing it three days after it went on. And the dashboard reminder only covers oil and filters — it knows nothing about your NCT, your tax, or your insurance.

So you end up managing your car with a combination of memory, hope, and occasional panic. Meanwhile, the average cost of running a car in Ireland is north of €10,000 a year in 2026 — and most people couldn't tell you where half of it went.

The apps that do exist? They're either built for the American market (no NCT, no motor tax, everything in miles), cost a monthly subscription, or require you to plug a dongle into your OBD port. We wanted something simpler.

What odo.ie actually does

odo.ie is a free car service tracker designed specifically for Ireland. You sign up with your email, add your car, and that's it — you're set up.

From there, odo.ie keeps track of everything:

  • Service reminders — oil, full service, brakes, tyres, timing belt, filters, fluids, spark plugs, clutch and more. Each tracked by kilometres and time, with email alerts when something is coming due.
  • Deadlines — NCT, motor tax, insurance. All in one place, with alerts before they expire.
  • Fuel logging & Fuel Insights — track every fill-up, see your real L/100km (or kWh/100km for EVs), monthly spend, cost per km, pump-price trend, best and worst fill-ups, and a year-end projection.
  • Cost tracking — see what your car has cost you over any period, broken down by category. Services, tyres, fuel, insurance — all of it.
  • Receipts & documents — snap a photo or attach a PDF to any fuel entry, service or renewal, and store the VRC, warranty papers and insurance policies in a per-vehicle Documents area.
  • Households — up to 6 people in one household see each other's cars in a joint dashboard (combined fuel spend, total km, full service history). Free to join on any tier, including Solo.
  • Service history — every service logged with date, mileage, garage and cost. When you sell, print or export a complete history buyers actually trust.
  • Share links — send one document, or a full service book, to a mechanic, accountant or buyer with a short-lived link you can revoke any time.
  • Calendar sync — export your deadlines to Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook so they show up alongside the rest of your life.

Solo is free forever for one vehicle. If the household grows, Family (€4/month, or €3/month billed yearly) covers up to 3 vehicles with co-driver sharing — your car, your partner's, the family runabout. Switch between them in one tap.

Who it's for

odo.ie is for anyone in Ireland who owns a car and wants to stay on top of it without making it a second job. That might be:

  • A first-time car owner who doesn't know when their next service is due
  • A parent managing two or three family cars
  • Someone about to sell and wanting a proper service history
  • A driver who just got caught out by an expired NCT or insurance
  • Anyone who's tired of guessing what their car actually costs them

You don't need to be a "car person" to use odo.ie. In fact, it's specifically built for people who aren't — people who just want the car to be sorted so they can get on with everything else.

Why it's free

We get asked this a lot. The honest answer: we built odo.ie because we needed it ourselves, and we didn't think it was right to charge for something this basic. Knowing when your NCT is due shouldn't cost a subscription.

We'll be upfront: premium tiers exist for households and power users — Family (€4/mo) for up to 3 vehicles with sharing, Pro (€8/mo) for up to 10 with Revenue-ready logbook and accountant exports, and a Fleet tier in development for businesses tracking dozens of vehicles. But the Solo tier — service tracking, reminders, fuel logging, cost analytics, one vehicle — will always be free. That's a promise, not a marketing line.

odo.ie is built and funded by Sprout Media Limited, a Dublin-based company.

Built for Ireland, not translated for Ireland

This isn't an American app with "kilometers" swapped in. Every feature in odo.ie is designed around how things actually work here:

  • NCT tracking with the correct intervals (every 2 years, then annually after 10 years)
  • Motor tax reminders with Irish renewal dates
  • Insurance deadline tracking tied to Irish policy cycles
  • An interactive map of 50+ NCT test centres across the country
  • Over 80 detailed guides covering everything from penalty points to importing a car from the UK
  • Costs in euros, distances in kilometres, dates in the format you'd expect

No app store, no downloads

odo.ie is a Progressive Web App. That means it runs in your browser — Chrome, Safari, Firefox, whatever you use — and you can install it to your home screen like a regular app. It works offline, sends notifications, and doesn't take up 200MB on your phone.

No app store reviews to leave, no updates to install, no storage warnings. Just open it and use it.

Your data, your control

Your data is stored securely on encrypted servers in the EU. We use modern authentication (magic links and JWT tokens) so you don't even need a password if you don't want one. Receipts, documents and vehicle photos are private by default — served through short-lived signed URLs that only you, your co-drivers and household members can open.

You can export everything — JSON, CSV, or a basic printable service history PDF — at any time, free. If you ever want to leave, your data goes with you. (Pro adds polished tax-ready PDFs and multi-year reports on top.)
