- Best buy (company car): xDrive50e M Sport — plug in nightly; confirm CoC CO₂ for BIK category.
- Best buy (private, no charger): xDrive30d xLine or M Sport if diesel is acceptable.
- Avoid: M60i / M Competition unless pace is the brief; unplugged 50e as a “cheap diesel”.
- No SEAI car grant — ICE and PHEV purchases get €0 SEAI purchase grant. Full EV fork = iX.
- Size honesty: X5 ≈ 4.94 m — between Q5 (too small) and Q7 (true three-row peer); not a Santa Fe / Kodiaq value play.

Irish BIK category and motor tax follow the CoC figure, not a magazine average. BMW Ireland's July 2026 retail list and European press WLTP weighted figures for the 50e do not always match — verify the car you order.
Why it sells in Ireland
- Brand best-seller — BMW Group Ireland said the X5 and X1 were the brand's best-sellers in 2025 (5,143 BMW registrations; Group 5,868)
- Company-car PHEV economics — 50e undercuts diesel list via VRT and sits far below Category E BIK when CoC CO₂ cooperates
- xDrive standard — wet-road / gravel-lane reassurance buyers expect at this money
- ~94–110 km WLTP electric range on the 50e covers real Irish suburban / school-run loops if you charge
- Adaptive air suspension (standard on 50e) — the ride product that justifies SAV money on Irish roads
- Dense BMW dealer network for Service Inclusive and warranty work
- Badge liquidity on the Irish used / PCP / lease-return market among large premium SAVs
- Optional third row on selected diesels for occasional seven-up duty without buying a Q7
Company-car BIK + PHEV maths
This is the Irish X5 story for 2026. Full rules live in our company-car BIK Ireland guide and the BIK calculator. Headline mechanics:
- Category A1 — zero-emission BEVs only (6–15%). The X5 ICE / PHEV is not A1 — that is the iX fork.
- Category A — ≤59 g/km CO₂ (9–22.5% by mileage band). Typical EU weighted 50e figures (~18–26 g/km) land here.
- Category B — 60–99 g/km. Applies if your 50e CoC matches the Irish list's 70 g/km row.
- Category E — 180+ g/km. Irish-list 30d / 40d (~189–195 g/km) live here — highest BIK % band, and no €10,000 OMV reduction in 2026.
- 2026 OMV reduction — €10,000 universal for cars in A1–D only (not Cat E). The €20,000 EV-only stack is for battery EVs.
Worked sketch — 50e vs 30d M Sport (illustrative)
| Assumption | 50e M Sport (€101,930) | 30d M Sport (€140,980) |
|---|---|---|
| OMV (list) | €101,930 | €140,980 |
| 2026 OMV reduction | −€10,000 (Cat A/B) | €0 (Cat E — excluded) |
| Taxable OMV | €91,930 | €140,980 |
| CO₂ category (if CoC matches) | A (≤59) or B (70) | E (~194) |
| Example rate @ ~30k business km | ~18% (A) or ~21% (B) | ~30% (E) |
| Illustrative annual BIK | ~€16,550 (A) / ~€19,300 (B) | ~€42,300 |
| Cash tax @ 48% marginal | ~€7,950 / ~€9,270 | ~€20,300 |
Exact percentages depend on your business-mileage band — run the calculator with your CoC CO₂ and OMV. The directional point is brutal: 50e company-car maths usually crushes diesel X5 maths, and the Irish list price of the 50e is often tens of thousands lower than the diesel before you even open the BIK table.
BIK uses CO₂, not your real petrol receipt. Unplugged 50es burn like heavy petrol SAVs (~9–12 L/100 km). If you will not charge at home or work most days, the company-car tax win still exists — the fuel win does not. Buy the 30d instead.
No SEAI purchase grant on ICE or PHEV
Ireland's SEAI new private-car purchase grant applies to qualifying battery-electric vehicles under the published price ceiling. It does not apply to petrol, diesel, or plug-in hybrid car purchases. Do not model an X5 30d, 40d, 50e, M60i or M Competition with SEAI cash off the invoice. A separate SEAI home-charger grant may still help if you install a qualifying wallbox for the 50e — that is charger support, not a car discount. Full-EV large BMW SAV = iX (from ~€91,590), with Cat A1 BIK — different product, different review.
Did you know? — insider facts
BMW Group Ireland's year-end release: the BMW brand recorded 5,143 registrations in 2025, and “the BMW X5 and BMW X1 were the brand's best-sellers.” Volume prestige, not niche — which also means dense used / lease-return supply later.
BMW Ireland July 2026: 50e M Sport from €101,930 vs 30d xLine €123,560 and 30d M Sport €140,980. Same badge, lower sticker — VRT structure rewarding the PHEV's CO₂ treatment. That inversion is the first number company-car managers notice.
The G05 50e's 25.7 kWh net pack and 94–110 km WLTP range are a step on from older 45e cars. Dublin / Cork suburban loops become electric if you plug in; Cork–Dublin motorway still needs petrol.
Adaptive air with self-levelling is part of the 50e product — one reason the PHEV feels like the “proper” X5 on Irish B-roads. Diesels often need it as an option; confirm before you compare like-for-like builds.
Irish list: 30d M Sport with third-row seats €141,353. The 50e is typically five seats. If three rows are non-negotiable every week, cross-shop Q7 / Santa Fe / Kodiaq honestly — the X5 third row is occasional, not a people-carrier brief.
From €174,700 on the July 2026 list with ~262 g/km CO₂, the M60i pays €2,400/year motor tax and insurance that assumes V8 repair costs. Pace halo — not a rational ownership or BIK product for most Irish buyers.
Generation history (1999–2026)
| Generation | Years | Key Irish points |
|---|---|---|
| 1st (E53) | 1999–2006 | Created the premium SAV class; early Irish prestige volume |
| 2nd (E70) | 2006–2013 | More luxury; watch timing chain / air suspension on used survivors |
| 3rd (F15) | 2013–2018 | Refined diesel era; still common on Irish motorways |
| 4th (G05) | 2018–present (LCI 2023) | CLAR; 45e then 50e PHEV; current Irish new-car offer; best used reliability of the line |
Used buyers: late G05 LCI 30d / 50e cars are the sweet spot if new money is out of reach. Avoid cheap E70 bargains unless you budget for timing-chain and air-suspension work. New buyers: current G05 LCI 50e is the company-car and residual-clarity play.

Irish trim + options
BMW Ireland's July 2026 G05 ladder (list prices; options stack fast):
| Variant | List (Jul 2026) | CO₂ (list) | Motor tax (WLTP band) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50e M Sport | €101,930 | 70 | ~€150* | Sweet spot company car — air std |
| 30d xLine | €123,560 | 189 | €600 | Entry diesel look; private high-miler value |
| 30d M Sport | €140,980 | 194 | €790 | Volume diesel residual clarity |
| 30d M Sport 7-seat | €141,353 | 194 | €790 | Third-row option on Irish list |
| 40d M Sport | €149,080 | 195 | €790 | Extra power; same tax band as 30d M Sport |
| M60i xDrive | €174,700 | 262 | €2,400 | V8 halo — insurance + thirst |
| M Competition | €241,680 | 289 | €2,400 | Performance flagship |
*50e motor tax ~€140 if CoC shows EU-weighted ~18–26 g/km; ~€150 if CoC matches the 70 g/km list row. M Sport 50e is the default Irish recommendation for company-car drivers who will charge. xLine 30d saves cash for private diesel keepers; 40d / M60i only if specific power is non-negotiable.
Real running costs — annual (~20,000 km)
| Item | 50e (charged daily) | 30d | M60i |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel / electricity | ~€1,000–€1,600 | ~€2,400–€3,000 | ~€4,500–€5,500 |
| Motor tax | ~€140–€150 | €600–€790 | €2,400 |
| Insurance | €1,400–€2,400 | €1,300–€2,200 | €2,200–€3,500+ |
| BMW dealer service | €500–€850 | €450–€750 | €600–€1,000 |
| Depreciation (year 1, rough) | ~€12,000–€18,000 | ~€14,000–€20,000 | ~€20,000–€30,000 |
| Annual total (excl. finance / BIK) | ~€15k–€23k | ~€19k–€27k | ~€30k–€42k |
Company-car drivers must add BIK tax cost on top — that is often larger than fuel. Private buyers feel depreciation first. Tyres on 21–22" M Sport setups can add €1,200–€2,000+ per full set.
5-year ownership cost projection
Illustrative private ownership, 100,000 km / 5 years, BMW-dealer serviced, excl. finance interest:
| Item | 50e (daily charge) | 30d | M60i |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel / electricity | ~€6,500 | ~€13,500 | ~€25,000 |
| Motor tax | ~€725 | ~€3,500 | €12,000 |
| Insurance | ~€9,500 | ~€8,500 | ~€14,000 |
| Servicing | ~€3,500 | ~€3,200 | ~€4,200 |
| Depreciation | ~€48,000 | ~€55,000 | ~€75,000 |
| Tyres + consumables | ~€2,500 | ~€2,200 | ~€3,500 |
| 5-year total | ~€70,700 | ~€85,900 | ~€133,700 |
| Cost per km | ~€0.71 | ~€0.86 | ~€1.34 |
These are planning figures, not quotes. A Santa Fe / Kodiaq still wins pure private cost-per-km — you buy the X5 for product and badge, not value. An X3 30e is the mid-size BMW SAV if X5 money is too far.
Depreciation + resale retention
| Drivetrain | 1-year retention | 3-year retention | 5-year retention |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50e (charged, M Sport) | ~80–85% | ~60–66% | ~45–52% |
| 30d M Sport | ~78–84% | ~58–64% | ~45–52% |
| 40d M Sport | ~76–82% | ~56–62% | ~42–50% |
| M60i / M | ~72–80% | ~50–58% | ~38–46% |
M Sport colours sell clearer than niche paints. Full BMW digital service history matters. Unplugged PHEVs with high fuel bills struggle at private sale — keep charge logs if you can. Air-suspension fault history kills buyer confidence; fix before listing.
Irish dealer service costs
- Main-dealer interim — often ~€400–€650 on a large SAV
- Inspection / larger services — ~€700–€1,100+ depending on packs and fluids
- Air suspension — compressor / bag diagnosis and parts can run into four figures when they fail
- Brakes / tyres — 20–22" M Sport rubber is expensive; budget €300–€450+ per corner
- PHEV HV checks — dealer rates for high-voltage inspections and software
- Service Inclusive — price at order; can transfer; softens years 1–5
- Independents — cheaper after warranty; residual buyers still prefer dealer stamps
- Compare mentally with Kodiaq / Santa Fe dealer bills (~€350–€500 typical) — BMW X5 is a different ownership tax
Common Irish issues
- Air suspension wear — overnight sag, noisy compressor, ride-height warnings; budget for bags / compressor on higher-mile G05s
- PHEV charge discipline — the ownership failure mode is social, not mechanical: cars that never plug in
- Timing chain / oil discipline (diesels) — B57 is far healthier than old N47 lore, but missed oil services still create expensive endings; insist on digital history
- V8 oil / cooling (M60i / M) — N63 / S63 families need documented oil use and cooling-system health
- Tyre and suspension wear on large M Sport wheels over Irish potholes
- 12V battery gremlins on modern BMWs — warning cascades; test before NCT
- Brake feel blending on 50e (regen → hydraulic) — normal PHEV behaviour
- Confirm open campaigns / recalls (incl. historical diesel EGR cooler campaigns on earlier cars) via BMW Ireland with the VIN before used purchase
NCT pitfalls (model-specific)
- First NCT at year 4 — keep service and warning-light history clean
- Headlight aim after kerb hits on large alloys
- Tyre age / tread on staggered M Sport setups — uneven wear common
- Suspension geometry — air cars that sit unevenly may fail on ride height / lamps / steering
- OBD / MIL — engine or hybrid warning light = automatic fail (Phase 2)
- PHEV: ensure the car completes readiness monitors; short electric-only trips can leave monitors incomplete
- See our How to Read Your NCT Report guide
Size honesty vs Q5 / Q7 / Santa Fe / Kodiaq / X3
| Model | Length | Typical Irish money | Class honesty |
|---|---|---|---|
| BMW X3 G45 | ~4,755 mm | ~€72–95k | Premium mid-size — X5 is a class up |
| Audi Q5 | ~4.68 m | ~€69–85k | X3 peer — not an X5 rival on footprint |
| BMW X5 G05 | 4,935 mm | €102–150k+ volume | Large premium SAV |
| Audi Q7 | ~5.06 m | Higher premium 7-seat | True three-row badge peer |
| Hyundai Santa Fe | ~4.83–4.90 m | ~€55–65k | Family 7-seat value — different brief |
| Škoda Kodiaq | ~4,758 mm | ~€44–55k | Space / seats brief, not €100k badge |
| BMW X1 | ~4.50 m | ~€49–62k | Compact volume BMW SUV |
Cross-shopping an X5 against a Q5 on “premium SUV” forums is a size error — the Q5 rivals the X3. Cross-shopping against Santa Fe / Kodiaq on “family seven-seat” is a budget error. The honest badge rivals are Q7 / GLE / XC90 class. The honest value alternatives are Santa Fe / Kodiaq — if badge and BMW air-suspension ride are negotiable.
Side-by-side competition (August 2026)
| Model | From (indicative) | Powertrain story | BIK angle | Seats / boot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW X5 50e | €101,930 | 94–110 km PHEV + air | Cat A/B vs diesel E | 5 · 500 L |
| BMW X5 30d | €123,560 | Diesel high-miler | Cat E — painful | 5/7 · ~650 L |
| Audi Q5 e-hybrid | ~€69k | ~100 km mid-size PHEV | Strong PHEV BIK | 5 · ~438 L |
| Audi Q7 | Higher premium | True 7-seat peer | Depends on powertrain | 7 · larger |
| Hyundai Santa Fe HEV | ~€55–65k | Self-charging HEV | Mass-market | 7 · family |
| Škoda Kodiaq | ~€44–55k | TDI / PHEV value | Volume | 7 · 845 L (5-up) |
| BMW X3 30e | €72,330 | 81–90 km mid-size PHEV | Cat A/B vs ICE D | 5 · 460 L |
| BMW iX (EV fork) | ~€91,590 | Full BEV | Cat A1 | 5 · EV SAV |
X5's honest place: large premium SAV with a sharp Irish 50e price/BIK story and air- suspension ride. Q5 / X3 are the mid-size fork. Q7 wins dedicated three-row badge money. Santa Fe / Kodiaq win space-per-euro. iX wins if Cat A1 BEV maths is the brief.
Best engine / trim to buy
- Best company-car buy: xDrive50e M Sport — charge nightly; confirm CoC CO₂
- Best private high-miler: xDrive30d xLine or M Sport
- Best private non-diesel: 50e if you will charge; else accept M60i tax pain or shop X3 / Q5
- Need occasional 7 seats: 30d M Sport third-row (€141,353) — or step to Q7 / Santa Fe for real three-row use
- Avoid: M60i / M Competition for rational ownership; ignoring Service Inclusive maths on a 5-year keep; buying a 50e you will never plug in
- Used: late G05 LCI 30d / 50e with full BMW history and healthy air suspension if new money is too far
Used G05 buyer's checklist
- Generation / LCI — pre-LCI vs 2023+ facelift; 45e vs 50e battery / range; iDrive generation
- Service history — BMW dealer stamps / digital history; Service Inclusive transfer?
- Air suspension — overnight height, compressor noise, leak stains, warning lights; get a specialist inspection
- 50e / 45e: battery State of Health, charge cable, wallbox history, real fuel averages
- Diesels: oil-service intervals, AdBlue use, timing-chain / rattles investigation if history is thin
- M60i / M: oil consumption evidence, cooling system, tyre / brake budget reality
- Options decode — third row, towbar, wheel size (ride / tyre cost), panoramic roof
- VIN recall / campaign check with BMW Ireland
- Tyre date codes + matching axle sets on staggered setups
- NCT VIR if due — see NCT Report Explained
- Avoid no-history imports and unexplained warning-light clears
The honest verdict
The G05 X5 is a large premium SAV that Ireland prices from €101,930 for the 50e and €123,560+ for diesels — and that BMW Ireland itself called out (with the X1) as a 2025 brand best-seller. It is not a grant-chasing EV, not a Santa Fe with leather, and not cheap to service or insure. What it is — especially as a 50e — is one of the cleaner company-car PHEV propositions in the BMW SAV range: often tens of thousands cheaper on list than the diesel twin, with air suspension standard and electric range that can cover Irish suburban life if you plug in.
Buy the 50e M Sport for company-car maths with charge discipline. Buy the 30d if you are private and diesel- tolerant. Cross-shop Q7 for dedicated seven seats; cross- shop Santa Fe / Kodiaq only if you are ready to drop the badge brief; cross-shop the X3 if mid-size money is enough.
