- Best buy (company car): 30e xDrive M Sport — plug in nightly; confirm CoC CO₂ for BIK category.
- Best buy (private, no charger): 20d xDrive M Sport if diesel is acceptable; otherwise 20 petrol and accept the fuel bill.
- Avoid: M50 unless pace is the brief; over-optioned M Sport Pro for residual clarity.
- No SEAI car grant — ICE and PHEV purchases get €0 SEAI purchase grant.
- Size honesty: X3 ≈ Q5 / GLC class (~4,755 mm) — not a RAV4 / Tucson alternative on price or footprint.

Irish BIK category and motor tax follow the CoC figure, not a magazine average. BMW Ireland's July 2026 retail list and European press WLTP weighted figures for the 30e do not always match — verify the car you order.
Why it sells in Ireland
- Company-car PHEV economics — 30e undercuts ICE list price via VRT and sits far below Category D BIK when CoC CO₂ cooperates
- xDrive standard on Irish volume petrol / diesel / PHEV — wet-road reassurance buyers expect at this money
- Steering and chassis still the BMW differentiator vs Q5 / GLC / XC60
- ~81–90 km WLTP electric range on the 30e is genuinely useful for school-run / suburban Irish commuting if you charge
- Dense BMW dealer network for Service Inclusive and warranty work
- Badge liquidity on the Irish used / PCP / lease return market
- Interior leap vs late G01 — curved display architecture, materials, and quiet cabin
Company-car BIK + PHEV maths
This is the Irish X3 story for 2026. Full rules live in our company-car BIK Ireland guide and the BIK calculator. Headline mechanics:
- Category A1 — zero-emission BEVs only (6–15%). The X3 ICE / PHEV is not A1.
- Category A — ≤59 g/km CO₂ (9–22.5% by mileage band). Typical EU weighted 30e figures (~21–26 g/km) land here.
- Category B — 60–99 g/km. Applies if your 30e CoC matches the Irish list's 64–69 g/km row.
- Category D — 140–179 g/km. Irish-list 20 / 20d (~154–165 g/km) live here — much higher BIK %.
- 2026 OMV reduction — €10,000 universal for cars in A1–D (not the €20,000 EV-only stack — that is for battery EVs).
Worked sketch — 30e vs 20 petrol (illustrative)
| Assumption | 30e M Sport (~€74,590) | 20 M Sport (~€84,390) |
|---|---|---|
| OMV (list) | €74,590 | €84,390 |
| Less €10k universal (2026) | €64,590 taxable OMV | €74,390 taxable OMV |
| CO₂ category (if CoC matches) | A (≤59) or B (60–99) | D (~156–164) |
| Example rate @ ~30k business km | ~18% (A) or ~21% (B) | ~27% (D) |
| Illustrative annual BIK | ~€11,600 (A) / ~€13,600 (B) | ~€20,100 |
| Cash tax @ 48% marginal | ~€5,600 / ~€6,500 | ~€9,650 |
Exact percentages depend on your business-mileage band — run the calculator with your CoC CO₂ and OMV. The directional point is stable: 30e company-car maths usually crushes ICE X3 maths, and the Irish list price of the 30e is often lowerthan the petrol twin before you even open the BIK table.
BIK uses CO₂, not your real petrol receipt. Unplugged PHEVs burn like heavy petrol SUVs (~7–9 L/100 km). If you will not charge at home or work most days, the company-car tax win still exists — the fuel win does not.
No SEAI purchase grant on ICE or PHEV
Ireland's SEAI new private-car purchase grant applies to qualifying battery-electric vehicles under the published price ceiling. It does not apply to petrol, diesel, or plug-in hybrid car purchases. Do not model an X3 20, 20d, 30e or M50 with SEAI cash off the invoice. A separate SEAI home-charger grant may still help if you install a qualifying wallbox for the 30e — that is charger support, not a car discount.
Did you know? — insider facts
BMW Ireland July 2026: 30e xLine from €72,330 vs 20 xLine from €81,530. Same badge, lower sticker — VRT structure rewarding the PHEV's CO₂ treatment. That inversion is the first number company-car managers notice.
The G45 30e's 19.7 kWh net pack and 81–90 km WLTP range are a step on from many older PHEVs that only managed ~40–50 km. Dublin / Cork suburban loops become electric if you plug in; Cork–Dublin motorway still needs petrol.
Battery packaging costs luggage space: 460 L seats-up on the 30e vs 570 L on the 20. If you regularly haul golf bags, buggies or dogs, measure the 30e boot before you fall for the BIK spreadsheet.
G45 continues BMW's CLAR architecture with the familiar longitudinal engine + ZF 8-speed + xDrive layout. Irish cars are RHD; parallel-import LHD bargains create NCT / residual headaches — usually not worth it on a €70k+ car.
From €119,830 on the July 2026 list, the M50 is the pace / badge halo. Insurance, tyres, motor tax and BIK all move against you. Most Irish X3 money should stop at M Sport 30e or 20d.
Generation history (2003–2026)
| Generation | Years | Key Irish points |
|---|---|---|
| 1st (E83) | 2003–2010 | First X3; rugged; early Irish premium SAV volume |
| 2nd (F25) | 2010–2017 | More road-biased; popular 20d era on Irish motorways |
| 3rd (G01) | 2017–2024 | CLAR leap; 30e PHEV arrives; huge used market now |
| 4th (G45) | 2024–present | New cabin / displays; ~81–90 km PHEV range; current Irish new-car offer |
Used buyers: late G01 20d / 30e cars are the value play if new-gen money is out of reach. New buyers: G45 is the company-car and residual-clarity play — especially the 30e.
The petrol / diesel / PHEV fork
30e xDrive PHEV — the Irish headline
- 2.0 petrol + e-motor; 299 hp / 450 Nm combined
- 19.7 kWh usable; 81–90 km WLTP electric; 11 kW AC
- 0–100 in 6.2 s; boot 460 L
- From €72,330 (xLine) / €74,590 (M Sport) July 2026
- Recommended for company cars with home / workplace charging
20d xDrive diesel MHEV — private high-miler
- 2.0 diesel + 48V; 197 hp / 400 Nm
- 0–100 in 7.7 s; real-world ~6.5–8.0 L/100 km
- From ~€81,020–€86,460 depending on trim (July 2026 list)
- Still the coherent choice for unplugged Dublin–Cork regulars
20 xDrive petrol MHEV
- 2.0 petrol + 48V; 208 hp / 330 Nm
- 0–100 in 7.8 s; thirstier than diesel on motorway miles
- From €81,530 (xLine) — often more than the 30e
- Buy only if diesel is a hard no and you will not charge a PHEV
M50 xDrive
- M Performance six; from €119,830
- Pace product — not a BIK or running-cost product
Irish trim breakdown
BMW Ireland's July 2026 G45 ladder (indicative list; options stack fast):
| Trim | 30e from | 20 from | 20d from | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| xLine | €72,330 | €81,530 | ~€81,020 | Entry volume look; enough kit for many |
| M Sport | €74,590 | €84,390 | ~€83,790 | Sweet spot — looks + residual clarity |
| M Sport Pro | €84,270 | €93,160 | €95,270 | Kit denser; watch option bloat |
| M50 | — | — | — | €119,830 — performance halo |
M Sport 30e is the default Irish recommendation for company-car drivers who will charge. xLine saves cash; M Sport Pro only if specific kit is non-negotiable.
Real running costs — annual (~20,000 km)
| Item | 30e (charged daily) | 20d | 20 petrol |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel / electricity | ~€900–€1,400 | ~€1,800–€2,200 | ~€2,400–€3,000 |
| Motor tax | ~€140–€150 | ~€280–€390 | ~€280–€390 |
| Insurance | €1,100–€1,900 | €1,000–€1,800 | €1,000–€1,800 |
| BMW dealer service | €450–€700 | €400–€650 | €400–€650 |
| Depreciation (year 1, rough) | ~€8,000–€12,000 | ~€9,000–€13,000 | ~€9,000–€13,000 |
| Annual total (excl. finance / BIK) | ~€11k–€16k | ~€12.5k–€18k | ~€13.5k–€19k |
Company-car drivers must add BIK tax cost on top — that is often larger than fuel. Private buyers feel depreciation first.
5-year ownership cost projection
Illustrative private ownership, 100,000 km / 5 years, BMW-dealer serviced, excl. finance interest:
| Item | 30e (daily charge) | 20d | 20 petrol |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel / electricity | ~€5,500 | ~€10,000 | ~€13,500 |
| Motor tax | ~€700 | ~€1,600 | ~€1,600 |
| Insurance | ~€7,500 | ~€7,000 | ~€7,000 |
| Servicing | ~€2,800 | ~€2,600 | ~€2,500 |
| Depreciation | ~€32,000 | ~€36,000 | ~€37,000 |
| Tyres + consumables | ~€1,800 | ~€1,600 | ~€1,600 |
| 5-year total | ~€50,300 | ~€58,800 | ~€63,200 |
| Cost per km | ~€0.50 | ~€0.59 | ~€0.63 |
These are planning figures, not quotes. A Tucson / RAV4 hybrid still wins pure private cost-per-km — you buy the X3 for product and badge, not value.
Depreciation + resale retention
| Drivetrain | 1-year retention | 3-year retention | 5-year retention |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30e (charged, M Sport) | ~82–85% | ~62–68% | ~48–55% |
| 20d M Sport | ~80–84% | ~60–66% | ~48–54% |
| 20 petrol | ~78–83% | ~58–64% | ~45–52% |
| M50 | ~75–82% | ~55–62% | ~42–50% |
M Sport colours sell clearer than niche paints. Full BMW digital service history matters. Unplugged PHEVs with high fuel bills struggle at private sale — keep charge logs if you can.
Irish dealer service costs
- Main-dealer interim — often ~€350–€550 on a premium SAV
- Inspection / larger services — ~€600–€900+ depending on packs and fluids
- Brakes / tyres — 19–21" M Sport rubber is expensive; budget accordingly
- Service Inclusive — price at order; can transfer; softens years 1–5
- Independents — cheaper after warranty; residual buyers still prefer dealer stamps
- Compare mentally with Tucson / RAV4 dealer bills (~€300–€450 typical) — BMW is a different ownership tax
Common Irish issues
- PHEV charge discipline — the ownership failure mode is social, not mechanical: cars that never plug in
- Software / iDrive quirks — early G45 cars may need updates; confirm latest at service
- Tyre and suspension wear on large M Sport wheels over Irish potholes
- 12V battery gremlins on modern BMWs — warning cascades; test before NCT
- Brake feel blending on 30e (regen → hydraulic) — normal PHEV behaviour, odd if you expect ICE pedal
- Confirm open campaigns / recalls via BMW Ireland with the VIN before used purchase
NCT pitfalls (model-specific)
- First NCT at year 4 — keep service and warning-light history clean
- Headlight aim after kerb hits on large alloys
- Tyre age / tread on staggered M Sport setups — uneven wear common
- OBD / MIL — engine or hybrid warning light = automatic fail (Phase 2)
- PHEV: ensure the car completes readiness monitors; short electric-only trips can leave monitors incomplete

Size honesty vs RAV4 / Tucson / Kodiaq
| Model | Length | Typical Irish money | Class honesty |
|---|---|---|---|
| BMW X3 G45 | 4,755 mm | ~€72–95k | Premium mid-size SAV |
| Audi Q5 / Mercedes GLC / Volvo XC60 | ~4.65–4.75 m | Similar premium band | True rivals |
| Toyota RAV4 | ~4.60 m | ~€45–55k hybrid | Family hybrid benchmark — different budget |
| Hyundai Tucson | ~4.50 m | ~€36–48k | Volume family SUV — not an X3 substitute |
| Škoda Kodiaq | Often longer / 7-seat | Mid-size value | Space / seats brief, not badge brief |
Cross-shopping an X3 against a RAV4 or Tucson on “family SUV” forums is a category error. The honest rivals are Q5, GLC and XC60. The honest value alternatives are RAV4 / Tucson / Kodiaq — if badge and BMW steering are negotiable.
Side-by-side competition (August 2026)
| Model | From (indicative) | Powertrain story | BIK angle | Boot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW X3 30e | €72,330 | 81–90 km PHEV | Cat A/B vs ICE D | 460 L |
| Audi Q5 TFSI e | Premium PHEV band | Fleet favourite | Strong PHEV BIK | ~Class average |
| Mercedes GLC 300e | Premium PHEV band | Long EV range story | Strong PHEV BIK | ~Class average |
| Volvo XC60 Recharge | Premium PHEV band | Quiet / safety | Strong PHEV BIK | ~Class average |
| Toyota RAV4 Hybrid | ~€48k | Self-charging HEV | Higher CO₂ than PHEV | ~580 L |
| Hyundai Tucson HEV | ~€44k | Volume HEV | Mass-market | 620 L |
X3's honest place: driver's premium SAV with a sharp Irish 30e price/BIK story. Q5 often wins fleet familiarity; GLC wins cabin theatre; XC60 wins calm; RAV4 / Tucson win cost-per-km.
Best engine / trim to buy
- Best company-car buy: 30e xDrive M Sport — charge nightly; confirm CoC CO₂
- Best private high-miler: 20d xDrive M Sport
- Best private non-diesel: 30e if you will charge; else 20 petrol with eyes open
- Avoid: M50 for rational ownership; ignoring Service Inclusive maths on a 5-year keep
- Used: late G01 20d / 30e with full BMW history if G45 money is too far
Used buyer's checklist
- G45 vs G01 — confirm generation, PHEV battery size / electric range, and iDrive generation
- Service history — BMW dealer stamps / digital history; Service Inclusive transfer?
- 30e: battery State of Health, charge cable, wallbox history, real fuel averages
- Options decode — HUD, adaptive suspension, towbar, wheel size (ride / tyre cost)
- VIN recall / campaign check with BMW Ireland
- Tyre date codes + matching axle sets on staggered setups
- NCT VIR if due — see NCT Report Explained
- Avoid no-history imports and unexplained warning-light clears
The honest verdict
The G45 X3 is a premium mid-size SAV that Ireland prices in the €70–85k+ band for volume trims. It is not a grant-chasing EV, not a Tucson with leather, and not cheap to service. What it is — especially as a 30e — is one of the cleaner company-car PHEV propositions in the BMW SAV range: often cheaper on list than the petrol twin, with electric range that can cover Irish suburban life if you plug in.
Buy the 30e M Sport for company-car maths with charge discipline. Buy the 20d if you are private and diesel- tolerant.
