- Company-car default: 530e M Sport from €72,510 — Category A BIK, ~€140 tax, ~93–103 km WLTP electric range IF you charge.
- Private / no wallbox: 520i M Sport from €72,240 — almost the same sticker, simpler life, Category C BIK if it is a company car.
- Family / dogs / golf: G61 Touring — from €76,090 (520i) / €76,760 (530e).
- Full EV fork: i5 exists on BMW.ie from €82,220; many fleets should also price an i4 under 2026 Cat A1 + €30k OMV stack.
- Avoid as a daily: M5 PHEV from ~€147k — spectacular, financially irrational for most Irish BIK drivers.

Emissions (BMW Ireland July 2026 list bands)
| Variant | CO₂ (list) | Motor tax band (guide) | BIK category |
|---|---|---|---|
| 520i M Sport saloon | 131 g/km | ~€210 (131–140) | C (100–139) |
| 520i M Sport Touring | 139 g/km | ~€210 (131–140) | C |
| 530e M Sport saloon | 49 g/km | ~€140 (1–50) | A (≤59) |
| 530e M Sport Touring | 54 g/km | ~€150 (51–80) | A |
| 550e xDrive M Sport | 63 g/km | ~€150 | B (60–99) |
| M5 Saloon | 105 g/km | ~€180 | C |
Some BMW PHEVs have seen higher published CO₂ after stricter homologation. Irish BIK uses the CoC figure for the car you register — confirm the exact g/km before your fleet team signs off Category A vs B. A 530e that tips over 59 g/km loses the Category A rate table.
Why it sells to Irish execs
- Default boardroom badge — still the car many Irish managers mean when they say “company car”
- 530e BIK case — Category A rates without jumping to a full EV policy fight
- Near-identical 520i / 530e stickers on BMW.ie (~€72.2k vs ~€72.5k M Sport) make the powertrain choice about tax and charging, not entry price
- Touring on the official Irish list — rare honesty in a market that often saloon-washes estates
- Driver's chassis vs softer E-Class defaults — M Sport is the Irish list norm
- Strong used liquidity — G30 stock everywhere; G60 will follow the same path
- BMW dealer footprint — service density matters more than brochure kit on a four-year PCP / lease
Did you know? — insider facts
BMW Ireland July 2026 cash: 520i M Sport €72,240 vs 530e M Sport €72,510. That is not a typo. The Irish decision is almost never “can I stretch to the PHEV?” and almost always “will I charge it, and what does payroll do with Category A vs C?”
From 2026, the €20,000 EV-specific OMV reduction is Category A1 (zero-emission) only. A 530e gets the €10,000 universal reduction like a 520i — then wins on the lower Category A rate table. An i4 / i5 can still beat both on pure BIK once the full €30k stack applies. Details: Company Car BIK Ireland.
G61 Touring prices are published for 520i, 530e, 550e xDrive, M5 and i5. Irish buyers who were told “estates aren't really a thing here” can ignore that for the 5 Series — the factory list already did.
Used shoppers: if it has the full-width curved BMW Interaction Bar / dual-screen layout, you are in G60 territory. G30 cars keep the more conventional twin-screen / iDrive Controller era — often preferred by drivers who dislike touch-first cabins.
At ~5.06 m the G60 is long. Multi-storey bays in Dublin and Cork punish nose overhangs and soft bumper corners. Budget for that in insurance excess and pride — it is the price of modern executive stretch.
Used G30 vs new G60
| Generation | Years | Irish ownership notes |
|---|---|---|
| G30 / G31 | 2017–2023 (LCI ~2020) | Used sweet spot; diesels common; 530e earlier PHEV with shorter e-range; watch AdBlue / DPF and service gaps on ex-fleet cars |
| G60 / G61 | 2023–present | Bigger cabin tech leap; longer 530e e-range; M Sport-heavy Irish list; i5 sibling on same architecture |
Private buyers paying cash often do better in a clean late G30 520d / 530e with full BMW history than in a maximally optioned new G60 that will take the steepest depreciation years on your balance sheet. Fleet and BIK buyers chasing Category A + modern e-range should start new (or nearly new) in a G60 530e — and model payroll before falling for M Sport Pro.
520i vs 530e — Irish BIK maths
Worked example using BMW Ireland July 2026 M Sport cash prices as a planning OMV proxy, 2026 rules, and the higher-rate ~48% marginal overlay (PAYE + USC + PRSI). Your employer's exact OMV may differ — always re-run with the CoC and payroll figure in the BIK calculator.
| Assumption | 520i M Sport | 530e M Sport |
|---|---|---|
| List / OMV proxy | €72,240 | €72,510 |
| CO₂ (list) | 131 g/km | 49 g/km |
| BIK category | C | A |
| OMV reduction 2026 | €10,000 universal | €10,000 universal |
| Taxable OMV | €62,240 | €62,510 |
| Rate @ 0–26,000 business km | 30% | 22.5% |
| Annual BIK | ~€18,672 | ~€14,065 |
| Tax cost @ 48% | ~€8,963/yr | ~€6,751/yr |
| Rate @ 26,001–39,000 km | 24% | 18% |
| Annual BIK (mid band) | ~€14,938 | ~€11,252 |
| Tax cost @ 48% (mid) | ~€7,170/yr | ~€5,401/yr |
Roughly €1,800–€2,200/year of net tax saving on the 530e in these bands — before fuel. Add lower motor tax (~€140 vs ~€210) and electricity instead of petrol on the commute, and the PHEV case is solid if you charge. Without charging, you keep most of the BIK win but lose the running-cost story. Full mechanics: Company Car BIK Ireland 2026.
When the 520i still wins
- No home or workplace charge point — and none coming
- Employer policy blocks PHEVs or complicates salary-sacrifice electricity
- You want maximum residual simplicity on a short private keep
- You will live in rural Ireland with sparse AC and long cold motorway runs every day
When the 530e is the rational exec pick
- Predictable sub-80 km commute + wallbox or workplace AC
- Higher-rate taxpayer on a company car in 2026
- You want petrol long-range for Cork–Dublin without BEV range politics
- Your fleet will not approve an i4 / i5 yet but will accept a PHEV
Touring (G61) in Ireland
BMW Ireland July 2026 Touring cash (selected):
| Model | Cash (BMW.ie July 2026) |
|---|---|
| 520i M Sport Touring | €76,090 |
| 520i M Sport Pro Touring | €80,330 |
| 530e M Sport Touring | €76,760 |
| 530e M Sport Pro Touring | €80,540 |
| 550e xDrive M Sport Touring | €98,390 |
| M5 Touring | from ~€150,880 |
The Touring premium over saloon is roughly €3,800–€4,200 on the volume M Sport cars — cheap relative to the lifestyle upgrade if you actually use the load bay. PHEV Tourings trade a little boot height / floor packaging for the battery; still far more useful than a saloon for family-exec Ireland.
i5 EV fork (+ i4 alternative)
The i5 is the battery-electric 5 Series sibling — same showroom gravity, different tax stack. BMW Ireland July 2026 examples: i5 eDrive40 Sport Edition from €82,220, M Sport from €90,110, M60 xDrive from €119,210 (saloon). Touring i5s sit a few thousand higher.
This review is not an i5 deep-dive. Treat i5 as the “go full EV in the same parking space” fork when Category A1 + the ~€30,000 OMV reduction beats a 530e on your payslip and you have home charging. For many Irish company-car drivers who want a BMW EV without 5 Series length or i5 money, the sharper starting point is the BMW i4 Ireland review.
Irish list prices (BMW.ie July 2026)
| Saloon (G60) | Cash |
|---|---|
| 520i M Sport | €72,240 |
| 520i M Sport Pro | €76,440 |
| 530e M Sport | €72,510 |
| 530e M Sport Pro | €76,230 |
| 550e xDrive M Sport | €95,560 |
| 550e xDrive M Sport Pro | €99,340 |
| M5 Saloon | from ~€147,090 |
Options, paint, wheels and dealer delivery move on-the-road totals fast — Irish BMW configs are notorious for turning a tidy M Sport into an €80k+ invoice. Negotiate packs; do not assume list equals what you pay.
Insurance + motor tax
Motor tax follows WLTP CO₂ on the CoC for cars first registered from 2021. Using BMW Ireland's July 2026 published bands as a guide: 520i saloon ~€210/year, 530e saloon ~€140/year, Touring 530e often ~€150. Full band tables: Motor Tax Ireland.
Insurance for a typical 35–45-year-old with strong NCB usually lands around €900–€1,600 for volume 520i / 530e cars, swinging with Dublin parking, annual km and option value. 550e and M5 are separate conversations. Multi-quote the exact VIN / CoC — PHEV repair networks can price above mild-hybrid equivalents.
Real running costs — annual (20,000 km)
| Item | 520i | 530e (charged) | 530e (never charged) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel / electricity | ~€2,400–€2,900 | ~€1,000–€1,600 | ~€2,600–€3,200 |
| Motor tax | ~€210 | ~€140 | ~€140 |
| Insurance | €900–€1,500 | €950–€1,600 | €950–€1,600 |
| Service (BMW / Inclusive amortised) | €400–€700 | €450–€750 | €450–€750 |
| Cash running (excl. BIK / finance) | ~€4,000–€5,300 | ~€2,500–€4,100 | ~€4,100–€5,700 |
Company-car drivers should add the BIK tax cost from the section above — often larger than fuel. Private buyers should obsess over depreciation and options, not a €70 motor-tax delta.
5-year ownership projection
Rough private-buy sketch at 20,000 km/year on a ~€72.5k M Sport with modest options: expect mid-five-figure all-in cost once depreciation, insurance mid-points, service and energy are stacked — typically worse than a three-year-old G30 bought well, and better or worse than an E-Class / A6 depending on residual luck and option restraint.
For company-car drivers, the five-year story is mostly BIK + electricity discipline. A charged 530e over a 520i can save on the order of €8,000–€12,000 in combined tax and energy across five years in the worked bands above — before you count residual differences. An i4 / i5 on 2026 Cat A1 maths can beat both; see BMW i4 Ireland and the BIK calculator.
M5 PHEV — expensive aside
The G90 M5 is a ~727 hp-class plug-in hyper-saloon (Touring too) listed from about €147,090 / €150,880 on BMW Ireland July 2026. It is extraordinarily fast, extraordinarily expensive to insure, and a weak everyday BIK choice versus a 530e once CO₂ category, OMV and tyres enter the spreadsheet. Buy one because you want an M5 — not because payroll suggested “a faster 5 Series.”
vs E-Class / A6 / Model S / i4
| Rival | 5 Series wins when… | Rival wins when… |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes E-Class | You want driver engagement + M Sport presence | You prioritise ride comfort / cabin lounge feel |
| Audi A6 | You want rear-drive dynamics and BMW residuals habit | You want quattro default and quieter isolation |
| Tesla Model S (niche) | You need a conventional exec saloon + dealer ritual | You want Supercharger routing and EV performance theatre |
| BMW i4 | You need 5 Series space, Touring option, petrol long-range via 530e | You want Cat A1 BIK + lower entry to BMW EV ownership |
| BMW 3 Series | You need full exec rear space, Touring load bay, and G60 presence | You want a cheaper 330e BIK play and a smaller car park footprint |
Best version to buy
- Most Irish company-car drivers with a wallbox — 530e M Sport saloon or Touring; keep options disciplined; confirm CoC ≤59 g/km
- No charging / private simplicity — 520i M Sport; skip Pro unless you need the kit list
- Family-exec load bay — 530e or 520i Touring before you talk SUV
- Fleet pushing full EV in 2026 — price i5, but start the BMW EV conversation with an i4
- Cash private bargain hunters — late G30 with full history before a loaded new G60
- Almost nobody on BIK — M5 / 550e as the daily
Used buyer’s checklist
- G30 vs G60 — cabin, lighting, curved display tell
- Saloon vs Touring; PHEV boot packaging
- 520i vs 530e vs diesel (G30) — match to charging reality
- Full BMW digital service history + Service Inclusive transfer
- Battery health / charging behaviour on PHEVs
- Tyre size and remaining tread (M Sport wheels eat budgets)
- Air suspension / adaptive damper faults on optioned cars
- Accident / panel-gap / parking-scrape history on a 5.06 m car
- CoC CO₂ for any residual BIK period on ex-fleet cars
- Grey import warranty reality vs Irish BMW dealer support
The honest verdict
The G60 5 Series remains Ireland's executive default for good reasons: badge liquidity, driver polish, and — uniquely helpful in 2026 — a 530e that costs almost the same as a 520i on BMW.ie while unlocking Category A BIK and low motor tax.
It is not automatically the smartest spreadsheet car. An i4 (or i5) can beat it on company-car tax if your employer will go battery-electric. A clean used G30 can beat a new G60 on private depreciation. An E-Class may simply suit how you actually sit in traffic. But if you want a new BMW executive car in Ireland and you will plug in, the 530e M Sport (saloon or Touring) is the coherent answer; if you will not plug in, buy the 520i and stop pretending the PHEV badge is free efficiency.
