- Company car: 330e M Sport — Category A BIK, often cheaper list than 320i, ~85–101 km WLTP electric if you charge.
- Private, no charger: skip the PHEV — buy 320i M Sport, used G20 diesel carefully, or an Octavia / Model 3.
- Private with home charging: 330e Touring if you need the estate; saloon M Sport if you do not.
- Avoid as a “bargain hybrid”: unplugged 330e fuel use erases the tax story.
- M3: separate €156k+ niche — not a 3 Series ownership decision.

330e vs 320i — company-car BIK maths (2026)
This is the Irish decision that actually moves money. From 1 January 2026, BIK uses CO₂ categories A1–E and four business-mileage bands. PHEVs at 0–59 g/km sit in Category A; the 320i's ~147–154 g/km sits in Category D. Both get the €10,000 universal OMV reduction in 2026 (A1–D). Only battery EVs get the extra €20,000 EV relief — the 330e does not. Full rules: Company Car BIK Ireland 2026.
| Scenario (0–26,000 business km) | 330e M Sport | 320i M Sport |
|---|---|---|
| List OMV (July 2026) | €59,390 | €61,960 |
| OMV after €10k relief | €49,390 | €51,960 |
| CO₂ category / rate | A · 22.5% | D · 33.75% |
| Taxable BIK (notional pay) | ~€11,113 | ~€17,537 |
| Rough tax cost @ 40% overlay | ~€4,445 / yr | ~€7,015 / yr |
| Rough tax cost @ ~48% overlay | ~€5,334 / yr | ~€8,418 / yr |
On the same low business-mileage band, the 330e can save roughly €2,500–€3,100/year in BIK tax versus the 320i before you count motor tax (€150 vs ~€270) or fuel. That gap shrinks at high business mileage (both rates fall) but Category A still wins. Plug your exact OMV and km into the BIK calculator Ireland.
Caveat: BIK OMV is the original Irish retail price of that car (options included), not today's used value. A loaded M Sport Pro changes the maths — run the actual order form, not the base Sport sticker.

Why it sells in Ireland
- Classic company-car badge — still the default “I've arrived” mid-size premium saloon in Dublin / Cork / Limerick fleets
- 330e BIK Category A with list prices that undercut the 320i on BMW Ireland's July 2026 sheet
- Touring estate still sold new — rare among rivals and genuinely useful for Irish family / dog / weekend luggage use
- M Sport is the volume trim — looks expensive, holds residual better than base Sport
- Steering and chassis still beat A4 / C-Class for most Irish road testers
- Dense BMW dealer network + strong used liquidity on DoneDeal / Carzone
- 2024 330e battery upgrade (~19.5 kWh) makes electric commuting plausible on a single overnight charge
Did you know? — insider facts
BMW Ireland July 2026 retail pricing lists 330e Sport at €57,820 and 320i Sport at €60,100 — and 330e M Sport (€59,390) undercuts 320i M Sport (€61,960). That is unusual versus older years when the PHEV carried a clear premium. Combined with Category A BIK, the company-car case writes itself.
G21 Touring 320i and 330e appear on the same BMW Ireland price list as the saloon. Expect roughly €2,000–€4,000 over equivalent saloon stickers depending on trim. For many Irish buyers the Touring is the only 3 Series that replaces an SUV without losing the drive.
Saloon 330e boot drops to ~375 L versus ~480 L on the 320i because the battery sits under the floor. Golf bags and weekly shopping still fit; weekly Cork–Dublin suitcase stacks get tighter. Touring recovers most of the practicality.
Irish used buyers search “M Sport” first. Base Sport cars can be better value new, but three years out the M Sport premium usually comes back in the private-sale price — shadowline trim, sport seats and 18"/19" wheels are what people click.
Under the PHEV packaging, the 330e uses the same 2.0 TwinPower turbo four (184 hp / 300 Nm) as the 320i, plus the transmission-integrated electric motor. When the battery is empty you are driving a heavier 320i — which is exactly why charging discipline decides whether the ownership story works.
Generation history (E21–G20)
| Generation | Years | Key Irish points |
|---|---|---|
| E21 / E30 / E36 | 1975–2000 | Classic / enthusiast cars; pre-CO₂ tax era for early cars |
| E46 | 1998–2006 | Peak used-market legend; rust and VANOS care needed |
| E90 / E91 | 2005–2013 | N47 diesel common in IE; timing-chain caution on some diesels |
| F30 / F31 | 2012–2019 | 320d company-car staple; still plentiful used |
| G20 / G21 | 2019–present | Current; LCI 2022; 330e 19.5 kWh update 2024; Touring sold in IE |
Used shoppers today mostly choose late F30 diesels for value or early–mid G20 petrol / PHEV for the modern cabin. Confirm first-registration date for motor-tax regime (NEDC vs WLTP) — see Motor Tax Rates Ireland.
320i vs 330e — the Irish fork
330e PHEV — company car / home-charger default
- 292 hp system · 420 Nm · 0–100 in ~5.9 s
- 19.5 kWh usable battery (2024+) · ~85–101 km WLTP electric
- 11 kW AC charging · overnight fill is normal
- Category A BIK · ~€150 motor tax · list often below 320i
- Only if you plug in — otherwise you own a thirsty, heavy 320i with a smaller tank
320i petrol — private no-charger buy
- 184 hp · 300 Nm · 0–100 ~7.4 s · RWD
- Real mixed Irish economy ~7.0–8.5 L/100 km
- Category D BIK — usually the wrong company-car choice vs 330e
- Larger boot · simpler ownership · no charge cable theatre
What about diesel?
New Irish 3 Series retail focus is petrol / PHEV / M. Used G20 320d cars remain common and can make sense for 30,000+ km/year drivers who will not charge a PHEV — inspect DPF / AdBlue history carefully and check motor tax on the specific CoC figure.
If you cannot charge at home or work most nights, do not buy a 330e to “save tax” as a private buyer. The WLTP CO₂ figure is a lab-weighted story; empty-battery fuel use is what hits your wallet on the M7.
Sport / M Sport / Touring — Irish trim ladder
| Trim (saloon, July 2026 list) | 320i | 330e |
|---|---|---|
| Sport | €60,100 | €57,820 |
| M Sport (volume) | €61,960 | €59,390 |
| M Sport Pro | €68,700 | €65,240 |
| Touring (G21) | 320i | 330e |
|---|---|---|
| Sport | €64,700 | €60,080 |
| M Sport | €66,620 | €61,650 |
| M Sport Pro | — | €67,550 |
M Sport is the Irish sweet spot — shadowline exterior, sport seats, the look buyers expect. M Sport Pro adds kit and wheels you may not need; run options carefully because every euro on the order form is locked into BIK OMV forever.
Real running costs — annual (~18,000–20,000 km)
| Item | 320i | 330e (charged daily) | 330e (rarely charged) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel / electricity | ~€2,400–€2,900 | ~€1,200–€1,800 | ~€2,600–€3,200 |
| Motor tax | ~€270–€280 | ~€150 | ~€150 |
| Insurance | €900–€1,500 | €1,000–€1,600 | €1,000–€1,600 |
| BMW service / consumables | €450–€700 | €500–€800 | €500–€800 |
| Depreciation (illustrative yr 1) | ~€6,000–€8,000 | ~€6,500–€9,000 | ~€6,500–€9,000 |
| Annual total (excl. finance / BIK) | ~€10k–€13k | ~€9.5k–€13k | ~€11k–€14.5k |
Company-car drivers should add BIK tax on top — that is where the 330e pulls away. Private buyers without charging should read the right-hand column and walk away from the PHEV.
5-year ownership cost projection
Private ownership, ~95,000–100,000 km over 5 years, median adult NCB, BMW-network or specialist serviced. Excludes finance interest and BIK (company-car path is a different spreadsheet).
| Item | 320i M Sport | 330e M Sport (charged) |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel / electricity (5 yr) | ~€13,000 | ~€7,500 |
| Motor tax (5 yr) | ~€1,375 | ~€750 |
| Insurance (5 yr) | ~€6,000 | ~€6,500 |
| Servicing + tyres | ~€4,500 | ~€5,000 |
| Depreciation (from ~€62k / €59k) | ~€28,000 | ~€27,000 |
| 5-year total (approx.) | ~€53,000 | ~€46,750 |
Charged 330e wins privately on energy + tax. Add company-car BIK and the gap widens further in the PHEV's favour. Uncharged 330e loses to the 320i — do not average those two scenarios.
Depreciation + resale retention
| Variant | 1-year retention | 3-year retention | 5-year retention |
|---|---|---|---|
| 320i M Sport | ~78–82% | ~58–63% | ~45–50% |
| 330e M Sport | ~76–80% | ~55–60% | ~42–48% |
| Touring M Sport | ~79–83% | ~59–64% | ~46–51% |
Touring and M Sport help. High-spec Pro packs and 19" run-flats can hurt when the next buyer balks at tyre bills. Full BMW digital service history remains the Irish resale lever that actually prints money.
Common Irish issues
- Unplugged 330e thirst — ownership killer for buyers who thought “hybrid” meant free economy
- Run-flat / 19" tyre costs on M Sport — Irish potholes + soft compound = budget €250–€350+ per corner
- Early G20 B48 oil consumption / service discipline — keep receipts; check for smoke on overrun
- Adaptive M suspension leaks / knocking on higher-mileage cars — listen on a test drive over broken N-road surfaces
- iDrive software quirks on early LCI cars — dealer updates matter
- PHEV charge-port / cable damage and missing Mode 3 cables on used examples
- Confirm open campaigns / recalls with BMW Ireland against the VIN before money moves
NCT pitfalls (model-specific)
- Tyre tread and age — low-profile M Sport rubber fails visual / tread checks more often than owners expect
- Headlight aim after kerbing / parking scrapes — common fail, cheap fix with a beam setter
- Brake imbalance on cars that mostly do short EV-mode trips (pads glaze) — do a proper highway brake check before the test
- Engine MIL / emissions readiness — OBD fail if warning lights are present (Phase 2 rules)

vs Audi A4 / Mercedes C-Class / Tesla Model 3 / Octavia
| Model | From (approx.) | Irish angle | BIK angle |
|---|---|---|---|
| BMW 330e | €57,820 | Best drive · Touring available | Cat A PHEV |
| Audi A4 / A5 PHEV class | ~€55k–€65k | Cabin polish · softer chassis | Cat A if <60 g/km |
| Mercedes C-Class PHEV | ~€60k+ | Ride comfort · denser options list | Cat A if <60 g/km |
| Tesla Model 3 | Often grant-framed lower | Efficiency · Superchargers | Cat A1 + €30k OMV |
| Škoda Octavia | Far lower | Space · value · lower insurance | Depends on powertrain |
Honest ranking for Ireland: want the drive and the badge with a charger → 330e. Want the lowest company-car tax and energy bill → Model 3. Want maximum car per euro and do not need prestige → Octavia. A4 / C-Class are taste / dealer-relationship choices once the PHEV BIK boxes are similarly ticked.
Best version to buy
- Best company car: 330e M Sport saloon or Touring — run OMV on the BIK calculator
- Best private with home charging: 330e M Sport Touring if you need the estate; saloon otherwise
- Best private without charging: 320i M Sport — or leave the segment for Octavia / Model 3
- Skip: M Sport Pro unless you will use the kit; uncharged 330e; M3 unless you mean it
- Used: late G20 330e with charge history and digital service file — or a clean 320d if your km are motorway-heavy
Used G20 buyer's checklist
- Build: pre-LCI vs LCI vs 2024+ 330e with 19.5 kWh battery
- Body: saloon vs Touring — confirm boot / parcel-shelf reality in person
- Full BMW digital service history + remaining Service Inclusive transferability
- 330e: Mode 3 cable present, charge-port condition, app charge logs, HV battery health evidence
- Tyre brand / date codes / run-flat status — budget replacements into the deal
- Adaptive suspension knocks, oil condition, coolant, undertray scrapes from Irish roads
- Option codes (HUD, Harman Kardon, laser lights, tow bar) — price them, do not assume
- VIN recall / campaign check with BMW Ireland
- NCT VIR + Cartell / history — see NCT Report Explained
- Grey import warranty reality — Irish dealer support is much of why you pay the badge
M3 — expensive niche (do not confuse with M Sport)
M Sport is a trim pack on a 320i / 330e. M3 Competition is a different car: ~€156,360 saloon / ~€160,510 Touring on BMW Ireland's July 2026 list, Category E-class emissions for BIK and motor tax, insurance that can dwarf a 330e, and consumables (tyres, brakes, fuel) that belong in a sports-car budget.
If you want an M3, buy an M3 with eyes open. If you want a 3 Series for work and school runs, M Sport 330e is the product — the M badge on the sill plates is not the same decision.
The honest verdict
The G20 3 Series remains Ireland's reference premium compact executive car because it still steers like one — and because the 330e finally aligns list price, Category A BIK and usable electric range for drivers who charge. Touring keeps the estate door open; M Sport is the trim the used market wants.
It is not a value car. An Octavia humiliates it on €-per-litre of boot space; a Model 3 usually wins pure company-car tax and energy maths. Buy the 330e when you will plug in and care about the drive; buy the 320i when you will not; buy something else when the badge is not worth the depreciation. Log every service and fill from day one — that file is what the next Irish buyer pays for.
