- Lowest tax = BEV €120 — Model 3, ID.3, EV3, Kona Electric, Elroq, ID.4, Enyaq all pay the same flat rate. Tax will not separate them; charging and insurance will.
- Best no-plug low tax — Niro HEV €180, then Corolla / Yaris Cross / C-HR 1.8 Hybrid at €190.
- Octavia is honest, not low — 1.5 TSI ~€220 / 2.0 TDI ~€210. Space king, not a tax winner.
- Tax is small money — a €70/year Band B vs BEV gap is dwarfed by insurance and fuel/charging. See cost of running a car.

Why this is a tax-first list (not another first-car clone)
Our best first cars guide ranks insurance-friendly ownership for N-plate drivers. Cheapest-to-insure pages chase group bands. This page answers a narrower question: which cars sit in Ireland's lowest motor-tax bands in 2026, and what that actually means for your wallet once insurance and fuel are in the sheet.
We mix BEVs (all €120) with efficient HEVs (Band A/B ~€180–€190) because “lowest road tax” searches include buyers who cannot charge at home. We do not pretend a €60 tax saving beats a €400 insurance swing or a diesel that drinks less on the M7 at 35,000 km/year.
How Irish motor tax works (post-2008 vs pre-2008)
Your rate depends on when the car was first registered in Ireland, not when you bought it:
- Pre-1 July 2008 — engine capacity (cc). Small petrols from €199; big engines climb toward €1,809. CO₂ on the brochure does not matter.
- 1 July 2008 – 31 Dec 2020 — NEDC CO₂ bands (€120 for 0–1 g/km up through €2,400).
- 1 Jan 2021 onwards — WLTP CO₂ bands (more granular; BEV still €120 at 0 g/km).
- BEV — flat €120/year (0 g/km), lowest private-car rate.
- PHEV — taxed on certified CO₂, not the BEV flat. Low CoC figures often land ~€140 (WLTP 1–50 g/km); older NEDC cars can hit €120 if they certified 0–1 g/km.
Budget 2026 left rates unchanged. Full tables and payment tips (annual vs quarterly surcharge): Motor Tax Ireland. Renew / change keeper: Tax Your Car Online. Exact band for a CoC figure: Motor Tax Calculator Ireland.
Reviews often say “Band B” as shorthand for the CO₂ slice that currently costs ~€180–€190. Always trust the grams on the cert and the live calculator — WLTP and NEDC tables are not identical euro-for-euro at the same g/km.
How we ranked
- Primary: annual motor tax — BEV €120 first; then HEV / PHEV bands from ownership pages; higher-band cars only where honesty demands (Octavia).
- Secondary: Irish availability & review depth — models we have already costed (grants, real-world fuel/kWh, dealer footprint).
- Tertiary: running-cost context — home charging unlocks EV savings; no-plug buyers stay on HEV.
- Not ranked on — insurance group, novice friendliness, or “best car” absolute. Use best EVs, best hybrids, and best first cars for those jobs.
Typical motor tax bands — shortlist
Figures from odo.ie ownership reviews (CoC-typical Irish volume trims). Confirm the exact registration before you pay — options, wheels and AWD can nudge CO₂ a band.

The 12 picks ranked (tax first)
Within the €120 BEV block, order reflects Irish value / efficiency / review strength — not a fake tax difference. HEV picks follow strictly by typical annual tax, then ownership quality. Octavia closes the list as the honest higher-band workhorse.
Tesla Model 3
€120 BEV · Ireland’s #2 EV 2025 · efficiency king- Battery
- LFP Standard RWD · larger packs on Long Range
- Range
- 534 km WLTP Standard · ~400–430 km real mixed Irish
- Real-world Irish efficiency
- ~14 kWh/100 km class-leading · motor tax €120 flat
Lowest road tax plus the strongest energy efficiency on this list. Tax is identical to every other BEV here — you win on kWh/100 km, Supercharger access and Category A1 BIK if it’s a company car. Full ownership maths in our Model 3 Ireland review.
Insurance and service network differ from franchised dealers; tax will not be why you pick or skip it. Quote insurance before you assume ‘cheap to run’.
Volkswagen ID.3
€120 BEV · grant-friendly hatch · VW dealers nationwide- Battery
- 52 kWh Pure · 77 kWh Pro
- Range
- WLTP varies by pack · real Pure suited to commuting
- Real-world Irish efficiency
- ~17 kWh/100 km typical · motor tax €120
Same €120 tax as Model 3 with the most accessible new-EV hatch pricing and Ireland’s densest VW Group dealer footprint. Pure sits under full SEAI + VRT relief — tax floor + purchase maths for private buyers.
Mk1 used software / 12V stories need diligence. Tax is settled; range and heat-pump fitment decide the ownership experience.
Kia EV3
€120 BEV · World Car of the Year 2025 · 7-year warranty- Battery
- 58 kWh Standard · 81.4 kWh Long Range
- Range
- Up to 605 km WLTP Long Range · ~480 km real-world class
- Real-world Irish efficiency
- ~17 kWh/100 km · motor tax €120
Compact-SUV packaging at the BEV tax floor. Long Range Air is the tax-equal, range-winning pick vs Elroq / Kona Electric for most Irish private buyers who can charge at home.
Still €120 — same as a cheaper Pure ID.3. Do not pay for Long Range ‘for the tax’.
Hyundai Kona Electric
€120 BEV · vs €190 Kona Hybrid on the same badge- Battery
- Long Range pack · 514 km WLTP claimed
- Range
- Real Irish mixed typically well below WLTP — home charge assumed
- Real-world Irish efficiency
- EV €120 tax · Hybrid sibling €190 (Band B ~110–117 g/km)
Clearest same-showroom tax lesson: Kona Electric €120 vs Kona Hybrid €190. If you have a wallbox, the Electric wins the road-tax and energy columns; if you don’t, stay Hybrid and accept €190.
Without home charging, public DC erodes the running-cost case even though tax stays €120.
Škoda Elroq
€120 BEV · compact MEB · Simply Clever- Battery
- 50 / 60 / 85 ladder
- Range
- Essence 60 ~449 km WLTP · Selection 85 up to ~573 km WLTP
- Real-world Irish efficiency
- Motor tax €120 · night-rate home charging decides TCO
Škoda’s compact EV SUV at the same €120 floor as EV3 / ID.3. Tax is a wash vs rivals — buy for dealer coverage, boot packaging and MEB familiarity.
3-year vehicle warranty vs Kia’s 7 — irrelevant to tax, relevant to ownership. Spec the heat pump for Irish winters.
Volkswagen ID.4
€120 BEV · Ireland’s #1 EV volume · family MEB- Battery
- Pro 77 kWh typical family pick
- Range
- Real mixed Irish often ~350–420 km depending on wheels / weather
- Real-world Irish efficiency
- ~17–18 kWh/100 km · motor tax €120
Family crossover at the BEV tax floor with VW dealers in every county. Tax matches Model 3; size and towing (where equipped) are why families pick it.
Larger, heavier, usually thirstier than Model 3 / ID.3 — still €120/year. Public-DC-heavy ownership hurts more than the tax line.
Škoda Enyaq
€120 BEV · ID.4 twin · Selection 60/85- Battery
- 60 / 85 packs · heat pump €1,271 option
- Range
- Selection 85 ~430–470 km real mixed Irish
- Real-world Irish efficiency
- Motor tax €120 flat BEV
Same tax floor as ID.4 with Škoda practicality. Watch the SEAI OMV cliff on higher trims — grant status changes purchase maths, not the €120 tax.
Sportline / RS do not pay more motor tax; they cost more to buy and often use more energy. Tax is never the differentiator inside the BEV block.
Kia Niro Hybrid
€180 HEV · best no-plug tax on this list- Powertrain
- 1.6 GDi hybrid 141 ps · FWD · also PHEV / EV on same chassis
- Real-world fuel
- 4.3–5.2 L/100 km real-world · tax €180 HEV / €140 PHEV / €120 EV
If you cannot charge at home, this is the tax-first hybrid: €180 vs Corolla / Yaris Cross / C-HR at €190, and cheaper than Sportage HEV (~€210). 7-year transferable warranty sweetens used buys.
Only €10–€70/year under Toyota HEVs — buy on warranty and packaging, not the tax gap alone. PHEV €140 only if you actually plug in.
Toyota Corolla Hybrid
€190 Band B · hatch / saloon / Touring Sports- Powertrain
- 1.8 Hybrid 140 hp (default) · 2.0 Hybrid 196 hp
- Real-world fuel
- 4.5–5.0 L/100 km (1.8) · tax €190 (1.8) / €200 (2.0)
Mainstream C-segment hybrid at Band B €190. Tax sits €70 above BEV floor and €10 above Niro HEV — still firmly ‘low tax’ vs €280–€600 performance / large-petrol bands. Estate Touring Sports (596 L) keeps tax while adding space.
2.0 Hybrid nudges €200. Not a BEV-tax twin — and that is fine if you refuse plugs.
Toyota Yaris Cross
€190 Band B · #4 SIMI 2025 small SUV hybrid- Powertrain
- Hybrid 130 · FWD or AWD-i · Toyota Relax eligible
- Real-world fuel
- 4.5–5.0 L/100 km · tax €190 (CO₂ 101–117 g/km typical)
Small-SUV height at the same €190 Band B as Corolla 1.8. Tax-equal with C-HR 1.8; usually cheaper to buy. AWD-i stays Band B on typical Irish CoC figures despite a small CO₂ penalty.
Same tax as Corolla hatch — pay the SUV premium for seating position, not for a lower disc.
Toyota C-HR Hybrid
€190 1.8 HEV · PHEV ~€140 if you plug in- Powertrain
- 1.8 Hybrid 140 hp · 2.0 Hybrid · PHEV ~22 g/km
- Real-world fuel
- 5.0–5.5 L/100 km (1.8) · tax €190 / ~€220 AWD-i / ~€140 PHEV
Stylish crossover at Band B €190 on the volume 1.8. Company-car / plug-in buyers can drop to ~€140 on the PHEV CoC — still not the BEV €120 floor, but the lowest C-HR tax path.
2.0 AWD-i ~€220 leaves the ‘low tax’ shortlist. PHEV tax only stays cheap if charging discipline is real.
Škoda Octavia
Honest higher band · ~€210–€220 · space king- Powertrain
- 1.0 TSI · 1.5 TSI e-TEC MHEV · 2.0 TDI — no Irish PHEV currently
- Real-world fuel
- ~5.5 L/100 km (1.5 MHEV) · tax ~€220 TSI / ~€210 TDI / ~€280 vRS
Included so this listicle stays honest: Octavia is Ireland’s space benchmark (600 L hatch / 640 L estate) but it is not a low-tax car. 2.0 TDI ~€210 can still beat a thirsty petrol on total cost at high motorway miles — see the diesel section.
vRS ~€280 tax. Dry-clutch DSG needs the 60,000 km fluid service. Do not buy an Octavia ‘for low road tax’ — buy it for boot and MQB durability.
When paying ~€200 tax on a diesel still wins
A Band C Octavia 2.0 TDI at ~€210/year can beat a Band B hybrid on total energy cost if you live on the motorway at very high annual kilometres (often 30,000+ km), cruise at constant speed where hybrids lose their stop-start advantage, and you have no reliable home charging for a BEV. The tax gap to a Niro HEV (€180) is only ~€30/year — fuel and AdBlue / DPF reality matter more. Versus a home-charged EV at €120 tax, diesel almost never wins the all-in column unless public charging is your only option and electricity is expensive.
- High-km motorway reps / rural contractors — efficient TDI + big boot (Octavia) can still pencil
- No driveway / apartment living — BEV tax floor is real; public DC can erase the saving
- Always model insurance — a “cheap tax” performance diesel is usually expensive to insure

Tax vs insurance & fuel — keep perspective
On a typical experienced-driver year: motor tax €120–€220, insurance €600–€1,500+, fuel or charging €400–€2,500 depending on km and energy source. Chasing a €70 tax saving while ignoring a €400 insurance swing or night-rate vs public DC is the wrong optimisation. This page ranks tax honestly; your spreadsheet should still be insurance- and energy-led.

Decision framework
- Home charging + lowest tax → any BEV on this list (€120) — pick Model 3 / ID.3 / EV3 / Kona Electric / Elroq / ID.4 / Enyaq on shape and grants, not tax
- No plug, lowest hybrid tax → Niro HEV (€180), then Corolla / Yaris Cross / C-HR 1.8 (€190)
- Plug-in but need petrol backup → Niro PHEV / C-HR PHEV (~€140) only if you charge daily
- Maximum space, accept higher tax → Octavia (~€210–€220); do not pretend it is a low-tax pick
- Novice / N-plate → tax second; start with best first cars
