How to Tax Your Car Online in Ireland: Step-by-Step Guide

Renewing motor tax at motortax.ie is a 5-minute job once you have the right details to hand — and most of the things that trip people up are avoidable with a bit of preparation. This 2026 guide walks you through the exact screens, the real cost difference between annual and quarterly (spoiler: quarterly is 13% more expensive), the three most common errors and how to fix them, and the arrears trap that can turn a missed month into hundreds of euro.

TL;DR

Go to motortax.ie. Enter your reg + PIN (from the renewal letter, or your VRC / last 6 of VIN). Confirm vehicle details, self-declare insurer + policy number, pick the period (pay annual if possible — quarterly costs +13%, half-yearly +11%), pay by card. Disc arrives in up to 10 working days. NCT status is checked live — expired NCT blocks you. You do not need your PPS for a standard renewal. Driving untaxed is a €60 FCN (€90 after 28 days) — no penalty points. Missed a month? Arrears apply from the 1st of that month; retro off-the-road declarations are not accepted since 2013. If you sell / scrap / export, claim unused tax back on Form RF120(min 3 unexpired months).

What you need before starting

Have these to hand before opening motortax.ie — it saves going back mid-flow:

  • Vehicle registration number (the plate)
  • Online PIN — one of:
    • The PIN printed on your renewal reminder (MTRF) letter
    • The last 6 characters of your VIN / chassis number (for vehicles already on your record)
    • The VRC document reference number (from your Vehicle Registration Certificate — the Irish logbook) if it's a first-time online transaction
  • Valid insurance — your insurer name and policy number. The policy must genuinely be in force (insurers cross-check)
  • Valid NCT — required for any car 4+ years old from first registration. motortax.ie checks NCTS database in real-time and blocks you if expired
  • A debit or credit card. motortax.ie does not accept Apple Pay, Google Pay, Revolut, bank transfer or cash
You do NOT need your PPS number for a renewal

Contrary to what a lot of guides say, PPS is not required for a straightforward online renewal. It's only required for first-time taxing after a change of ownership (which has to be done in person at the Motor Tax Office anyway).

Step-by-step on motortax.ie

  1. Go to motortax.ie in your browser (use the government official URL — there are scam look-alikes. Bookmark it)
  2. Click "Tax Your Vehicle" (sometimes labelled "Motor Tax Online"). This is the landing action on the homepage
  3. Enter your vehicle registration number exactly as on your plate (no spaces needed)
  4. Enter the PIN / VRC / last-6-of-VIN as described above
  5. Confirm vehicle details. The system displays make, model, engine size, CO2 category, first-reg date and current tax status. If anything is wrong, stop — corrections have to be made via the Motor Tax Office before you can proceed
  6. Choose the tax period — annual, half-yearly or quarterly. The dropdown shows the exact euro amount for each. See the cost comparison below before picking quarterly
  7. Enter your insurance details — insurer name and policy number. This is self-declared
  8. NCT check happens silently in the background. If your NCT is expired or due within the tax period, the site will block you here with a message
  9. Pay by debit / credit card — typically Mastercard or Visa. 3DS authentication may apply
  10. Confirmation screen — print or save the confirmation email. The physical disc is posted separately to your NVDF-registered address
  11. Disc arrives in post — officially up to 10 working days, typically 5–7. Display on the windscreen as soon as it arrives
Legal from day one — the disc is proof, not authority

Your tax is valid from the effective date (typically the 1st of the following month) regardless of whether the physical disc has arrived. Gardaí check tax status live on PULSE. Don't panic if the disc is slow — you're not driving untaxed, you're just missing the paper slip. Keep the transaction confirmation email in case of a roadside check in the interim.

The annual / half / quarterly cost trap

Picking "quarterly" because it's the lowest number on the dropdown is the single most common mistake on motortax.ie. Half-yearly and quarterly carry explicit premiums over the annual rate:

PeriodRate of annualPremium vs annual
Annual (12 months)100% (one payment)
Half-yearly (6 months)55.5% × 2 = 111%+11%
Quarterly (3 months)28.25% × 4 = 113%+13%

Worked example — a Band B car at €170/year:

  • Annual: €170 once — cheapest
  • Half-yearly: €170 × 55.5% = €94.35 per disc × 2 = €188.70/year
  • Quarterly: €170 × 28.25% = €48.03 per disc × 4 = €192.10/year

You pay €22 more every year for the convenience of spreading payments. On a higher-rate Band like F (€514/year), the premium is around €66/year extra for quarterly. If cash flow allows, pay annually. If you truly need to spread, half- yearly costs less than quarterly — the dropdown hides this.

Full rate tables for every CC and CO2 band are in our motor tax rates Ireland guide.

Common problems and fixes

"Your NCT has expired"

motortax.ie checks the NCTS database live. If your NCT is expired, you cannot pay motor tax until you've passed a new NCT. Book the NCT first (ncts.ie) — test results are reflected in the NCTS database within hours of a pass, so you can renew motor tax the same day you pass. A pending NCT booking does not count — the test has to be completed and passed.

"Insurance not found" / "Unable to verify insurance"

Rare online, because motortax.ie does not live-verify insurance against the Motor Insurance Database. If this message appears, double-check the insurer name (spelled exactly as on your certificate) and policy number (no spaces or dashes). If it still fails, call your insurer — occasionally the policy hasn't been loaded to the MID yet (24–48 hours after inception is normal).

"Vehicle not found" / "Vehicle details incorrect"

Usually means the NVDF has a discrepancy — a new import awaiting registration, or a recent change of ownership still processing. Contact your local Motor Tax Office or call motortax.ie support. Do not keep re-trying — repeated failed attempts can lock the reg for a period.

"Card declined" or "Payment failed"

Often a 3D Secure issue rather than a funds issue. Try a different card, disable any VPN, or switch browsers. Contactless bank apps sometimes block the motortax.ie merchant by default — enable "online purchases" / e-commerce in your banking app.

"Wrong address on the disc"

Discs are posted to the address on the NVDF. If you've moved and haven't updated, the disc goes to your old address. Update the NVDF address at your local Motor Tax Office (bring VRC, photo ID, proof of new address — utility bill, bank statement). There's no online address change in 2026.

Arrears — the most expensive mistake

If your motor tax has lapsed, you can't simply skip the gap and tax from today. Arrears apply from the 1st of the month following the disc's expiry, at the monthly rate (one tenth of the annual figure, rounded). On a €514 Band F car, one missed month costs ~€51 in arrears; three missed months is ~€153.

Retro off-the-road declarations are NOT accepted

Since the Non-Use of Motor Vehicles Act 2013, you cannot file a retrospective off-road declaration to skip arrears. The RF150 off-road declaration must be filed in advance — in the month the motor tax expires, or within 21 days of purchase/import. If you realised after the fact, you're liable for full arrears. See our RF150 off-road declarationguide for the rules in detail.

The only way to avoid arrears on a car that isn't being used is to file RF150 in advance, every 3–12 months. The second most common scenario — a car parked for weeks while abroad — can still attract arrears if no RF150 was filed before the lapse.

When is tax due?

  • Motor tax discs run to the last day of a calendar month. A disc showing "expires 31-07-2026" covers you through 23:59 on 31 July 2026
  • The new disc's effective date is the 1st of the following month. You can renew online up to 2 months in advance
  • There is no official grace period. Driving on the 1st of a new month with an expired disc is an offence from day 1, even if your renewal is in the post
  • Gardaí may exercise enforcement discretion in the first day or two, but it's not policy and shouldn't be relied on — particularly around M50 and motorway ANPR, which is automated
  • Your renewal reminder (MTRF) letter typically arrives 4–6 weeks before the expiry date. Don't rely on it — post delays happen, and if you've moved recently it may not reach you at all

When you have to go in person

Not every motor-tax transaction works online. You need to visit your local Motor Tax Office for:

  • First tax after buying a used car privately — once change-of-ownership is processed (see our change of ownership guide), you must tax in person on Form RF100A with your PPS. Subsequent renewals are online
  • First tax on a newly imported car — NCTS issues an RF100 at VRT registration; first tax is typically at the Motor Tax Office, then online thereafter
  • Change of use (private to commercial, vice versa) — requires a Goods Only Declaration (RF111A) witnessed by a Garda
  • Address change on the NVDF — no online option
  • Vehicle details correction (wrong engine size, wrong tax class) — in person only
  • Disabled Drivers / Passengers Scheme tax exemption applications

Motor Tax Offices are run by local authorities — find yours at gov.ie. Opening hours vary; most require an appointment in 2026. Bring VRC, photo ID, proof of insurance, NCT cert (if applicable), PPS and payment.

Motor tax refunds (Form RF120)

If you sell, scrap, export, or permanently stop using your car, you can claim back the unused portion of your motor tax. Key rules:

  • Form RF120 — downloadable from gov.ie, submitted to your local Motor Tax Office (not online)
  • Refund covers unexpired whole calendar months from the date of surrender
  • Minimum 3 unexpired months required — no refund if fewer than 3 months remain
  • Apply before the disc expires. Late applications are refused
  • Scrapped or stolen cars: the RF120 must be witnessed at a Garda station
  • Sold cars: return the disc with the form along with proof of sale (VRC Section E completed with new owner, or RF200)
  • Refunds arrive by bank transfer, typically within 4–6 weeks

For scrapping-specific advice including ATF and Certificate of Destruction, see our scrap car Irelandguide.

Penalties for driving untaxed

Driving an untaxed vehicle is a summary offence under the Finance (Excise Duties) (Vehicles) Act 1952 as amended. The penalty ladder:

  • €60 Fixed Charge Notice — if paid within 28 days
  • €90 FCN — if paid within days 29–56
  • Court summons — if still unpaid after 56 days
  • Up to €2,000 fine on summary conviction at District Court
  • NO penalty points attach to motor tax offences — this is a common misconception. Penalty points apply to insurance, NCT and specific driving offences, not to untaxed driving
  • Vehicle can be seized on a 4th offence or where insurance / NCT are also expired

M50 barrier-free tolling also works from plate recognition — an untaxed car is still billed the M50 toll, but the lack of tax doesn't affect the toll. Other penalty-point offences (expired NCT: 3 points, no insurance: 5 points + vehicle seizure) are separate and unrelated.
