- #1 Toyota Yaris Hybrid (~3,940 mm, €23,995) — default Dublin kerb / permit answer.
- #2 Yaris Cross (4,180 mm) — small-SUV height that still parks; review exists.
- #3 Inster / i20 — Inster for shortest mainstream EV (~€19,595); i20 Hybrid (~€25,295) for ICE dealers everywhere.
- #4 Kia EV3 (4,300 mm exactly) — on the soft ceiling; strong if you have home charging.
- #5 MG4 / ID.3 (~4,287 / 4,261 mm) — hatch EV value + VW network respectively.
- #6 Volvo EX30 (4,233 mm) — short premium; 318 L boot honesty.
- #7 Hyundai Kona (4,355 mm) — soft include; not Tucson.
- #8 Polo / Golf — Polo easy; Golf ~4,282–4,289 mm still under 4.3 m.
- Avoid as city daily: Tucson (4,500 mm), Q5 (~4,717 mm), long estates as only car.
This page vs Compact EVs and Small SUVs
Best Compact EVs ranks new city-scale EVs on SEAI grant ceiling, heat pumps and winter range (EV3, Elroq, EX30, Kona Electric, MG4, ID.3, EQA).
Best Small SUVs ranks national ownership winners — Yaris Cross #4 SIMI 2025, Kona #5 — for Irish mixed driving, not pure parking geometry.
This Dublin-parking listicle filters on length / multi-storey / permit-space first and deliberately mixes ICE, hybrid and compact EV. If your brief is grants-only or national small-SUV ownership, use the siblings above.
Why length matters in Dublin
- Bay sizes — Dublin City Council on-street bays are typically ~4.8 m × 2.4 m. Sub-4.3 m cars leave door / bumper forgiveness; 4.5 m+ mid-size SUVs eat the margin.
- Multi-storey ramps — older sites (Stephen's Green, Q-Park Setanta and peers) were laid out for 1990s-size cars. Length + turning circle + camera kit matter more than badge.
- Residential permits — Victorian / Edwardian streets mean nose-to-kerb gaps, skip bins and double-parked vans. Every 100 mm you do not need becomes a weekly stress tax.
- Clamping & parking friction — overhanging bays, blocking driveways and awkward angles raise clamp / fine risk. Shorter cars reverse out cleaner and leave clearer sightlines for cyclists and e-scooters.
- Same physics in Cork / Galway / Limerick — this shortlist travels; Dublin is just where bay tightness and multi-storey density bite hardest.
A Tucson (4,500 mm) can physically sit in a 4.8 m bay. That does not make it a pleasant Dublin daily when every shop run is a multi-storey spiral or a one-way terrace with a bin lorry. Length is the primary filter here for a reason.
How we ranked
- Overall length — prefer ≤ ~4.3 m (state mm on each card). Soft include ~4.35–4.4 m with honesty.
- Turning / cameras — rear camera + sensors (and 360° where fitted) matter as much as millimetres in Irish multi-storeys.
- Urban usability — doors that open in tight bays, boot realism, visibility over parked vans.
- Insurance / tax / price — secondary. We still quote Irish price bands from odo.ie reviews / listicles so you can shortlist, not so we re-rank on TCO.
Powertrain is mixed on purpose: parking geometry does not care whether you burn petrol or electrons. For EV grant / heat-pump depth see Best Compact EVs; for overall EV market see Best EVs.
The 8 picks ranked
Ranked for a Dublin (or similar Irish-city) private buyer living on permits, multi-storeys or tight kerbs — 8,000–15,000 km/yr, mixed hybrid/EV options. Adjust with the decision framework further down.
Toyota Yaris Hybrid
~3,940 mm · #10 SIMI 2025 · kerb default- Powertrain
- Length ~3,940 mm · 1.5 Hybrid ~116 hp / e-CVT / FWD
- Real-world fuel
- 4.2–4.8 L/100 km real-world Irish
The shortest mainstream hybrid that still works as a proper daily. Stop-start Dublin traffic is where the hybrid pays back hardest; Toyota Relax can extend warranty to 10 years if dealer-serviced. Easy multi-storey placement, low overhang risk, strong residuals.
Boot ~286 L is genuinely small. No dedicated odo.ie model review yet — length cited from XP210-class manufacturer data (~3.94 m), not an odo.ie review table. Cross-check Best Hybrids / Best First Cars pricing.
Toyota Yaris Cross
4,180 mm · #4 SIMI 2025 · height without Tucson length- Powertrain
- Length 4,180 mm · Hybrid 130 · FWD or AWD-i
- Real-world fuel
- 4.5–5.0 L/100 km · tax ~€190
Small-SUV seating height that still parks like a large hatch. 4,180 mm leaves clear bay margin vs Tucson-class. Same Toyota hybrid / Relax ownership story as the hatch Yaris — Ireland's top-selling hybrid narrative in 2025.
Costs more to buy (and usually insure) than the hatch. Boot ~397 L is usable but not Tucson. Only stretch here if you need height — not because 'SUV' sounds safer in traffic.
Hyundai Inster / i20 class
Inster ~3,825 mm class · i20 ~4,040 mm class- Powertrain
- Inster: city BEV · i20: 1.0 mild-hybrid / DCT
- Real-world fuel
- Inster: €120 tax · i20 ~5.5–6.0 L/100 km
Inster is the parking-geometry EV: shorter than a Yaris, Hyundai dealers everywhere, V2L, World Car of the Year 2025 — ranked #1 on Best EVs for budget city buyers. Step to i20 Hybrid when you want ICE / mild-hybrid with the same dealer footprint and supermini ease.
Exact Inster / i20 mm not tabulated in an odo.ie model review yet — lengths are manufacturer-class figures (~3.825 m / ~4.04 m). Inster boot is city-micro (~238–280 L). i20 'Hybrid' is mild-hybrid only, not Yaris-grade efficiency. No dedicated Inster / i20 review pages yet — use Best EVs / Best Hybrids.
Kia EV3
4,300 mm exactly · on the soft ceiling- Battery
- 58.3 kWh Standard or 81.4 kWh Long Range
- Range
- WLTP ~435 / 605 km · real ~340–520 km
Exactly 4,300 mm — fits standard Dublin bays, sits at our soft length ceiling. 460 L boot, V2L standard, Kia 7-year / 150,000 km warranty, dealers in every county. Long Range Air is the value compact-EV buy when you have home charging.
Honesty: this is the longest 'hard' pick before soft includes. Tightest Victorian terraces and oldest ramps favour shorter cars above. Heat pump only on GT-Line S. Full depth on Best Compact EVs and the EV3 review.
MG4 / Volkswagen ID.3
MG4 ~4,287 mm · ID.3 4,261 mm- Battery
- MG4 Urban ~43/54 kWh LFP · ID.3 52 / 77 kWh class
- Range
- Urban LR up to 416 km WLTP · ID.3 Pro up to ~549 km class
Hatch EV packaging that parks cleaner than most small SUVs. ID.3 (4,261 mm, 385 L) wins on VW dealer density and residuals; MG4 Urban (~4,287 mm, big claimed boot, heat pump + V2L on Comfort) wins on grant-inclusive sticker. Pick by network vs price.
MG dealer / parts thinner outside big cities; softer residuals. ID.3: specify heat pump. Confirm Urban vs classic RWD MG4 on the quote — platforms differ. Reviews: MG4 Ireland · Volkswagen ID.3 Ireland.
Volvo EX30
4,233 mm · premium short · 318 L boot honesty- Battery
- 51 kWh base or 69 kWh Extended Range / Twin
- Range
- ER ~475 km WLTP · winter plan ~300–350 km with heat pump
One of the shortest premium EVs you can buy — 4,233 mm with dense ADAS and Google Automotive. Excellent multi-storey footprint when the badge matters. Extended Range Core includes the heat pump for Irish winters.
318 L boot is honest compact, not family-SUV. Vehicle warranty 3 yr / 100k. Base 51 kWh without heat pump is thin as an only car. Luggage buyers should prefer EV3 / Kona / Yaris Cross even if slightly longer.
Hyundai Kona (not Tucson)
4,355 mm · soft include · Hybrid or Electric- Powertrain
- Length 4,355 mm · 1.0T / 1.6 Hybrid 141 hp / Electric SX2
- Real-world fuel
- Hybrid 5.0–6.0 L/100 km · EV €120 tax · boot 466 L
Soft include at 4,355 mm — still parkable in standard Dublin bays with less margin than Yaris Cross. Adult-usable rear seats, 466 L boot, Hyundai dealers everywhere. Choose Hybrid for kerb-only; Electric if you have a wallbox (see Compact EVs).
55 mm over our ~4.3 m hard line — fine for most bays, less forgiving in the oldest multi-storeys. Do not confuse with Tucson (4,500 mm). 1st-gen used EV needs battery-recall VIN diligence.
Volkswagen Polo / Golf
Polo ~4,050–4,075 mm · Golf ~4,282–4,289 mm- Powertrain
- Polo: B-segment hatch · Golf Mk8/8.5: ~4,282–4,289 mm
- Real-world fuel
- Volume 1.0 / 1.5 TSI · skip GTI / R
Polo is the easier multi-storey VW. Golf remains under 4.3 m (generation / bumper dependent per our Golf review) — still a coherent city hatch if you want C-segment space and VW liquidity, especially used Mk7.5 / careful Mk8.
Golf is not the shortest answer on this list — call it 'still parkable' rather than parking king. GTI / R destroy insurance and tax maths. No dedicated Polo review yet; Golf length from odo.ie review table.
What to avoid as a Dublin daily
Hyundai Tucson at 4,500 mm and Audi Q5 at ~4,717 mm fit a 4.8 m bay on paper and fail the multi-storey / permit-space lifestyle test. Same warning for long estates as an only city car — brilliant for touring and family luggage (see Best Estates), painful as a Rathmines / Portobello daily.
- ID.4 / Model Y / Ioniq 5 class — family EV packaging; parkable in new sites, friction in older ramps — ranked on Best EVs, not here
- Mid-size SUV default — buy Tucson / Sportage / RAV4 when you need the space nationally, not because the company car list starts there
- Hot hatches in city form — GTI / ST / vRS add insurance and kerb-rash anxiety for no parking benefit
Decision framework
- Kerb-only / permit street, no wallbox path → Yaris Hybrid, i20, Polo, or Yaris Cross if you need height. Skip public-DC-dependent EVs until charging matures — EV Public Charging Ireland.
- Driveway / dedicated apartment EV bay → Inster (shortest), ID.3 / MG4 (hatch value), EV3 (range + boot), EX30 (badge + length). Depth: Best Compact EVs + EV Home Charging.
- Need height + still park → Yaris Cross (4,180 mm) before Kona (4,355 mm) before anything Tucson-shaped.
- Need boot + city → EV3 / Kona / Yaris Cross over EX30 (318 L honesty).
- VW badge, city first → Polo over Golf; Golf still under 4.3 m if you need the space.
- Overall EV shortlist (not parking-only) → Best EVs in Ireland.
