odo.ie vs Fuelio: Which Car Tracker Is Better for Irish Drivers?

Fuelio is a genuinely brilliant fuel-tracking app. Owned by Slovak navigation company Sygic since 2015, ad-free, 5 million+ Google Play downloads, 4.8-star rating — and entirely free. If your primary concern is fuel consumption trends and per-station prices, Fuelio is one of the best tools on the market. But if you're an Irish driver, the bigger question isn't how efficient is my fuel use? — it's when's my NCT due? And my motor tax? And my insurance? odo.ie is built specifically for the Irish side of that equation. Here's the honest head-to-head.

TL;DR

Fuelio is a best-in-class global fuel-and-cost logging app (Sygic, 5M+ downloads, ad-free, free). Deeper fuel tracking than odo.ie — bi-fuel support, GPS-logged trips, crowdsourced fuel prices. odo.ie is an Irish-built all-in-one vehicle dashboard (Solo free for one vehicle, Family €4/mo for 3) with NCT / motor tax / insurance reminders, 50 NCT centres mapped, 70+ Irish guides built in, .ics calendar sync, and a service-history export your Irish garage will recognise. If fuel is your obsession, pick Fuelio. If you drive in Ireland, pick odo.ie. If you're torn, pick odo.ie — you'll miss far fewer deadlines, and the fuel tracking is still good enough for 95% of drivers.

What each tool does (one paragraph each)

Fuelio

A fuel logging and basic cost-tracking Android / iOS app, Android-first since launch in 2011, acquired by Sygic (a Slovak navigation company better known for Sygic Maps) in 2015. The core product is excellent — fuel consumption tracking with a "full tank algorithm" for accurate L/100km, multi-vehicle and bi-fuel (petrol + LPG) support, GPS trip logging exported as GPX, crowdsourced fuel prices showing nearby stations, and a cost/service module with custom categories. Free since the Sygic acquisition, with no ads; premium features around route planning with fuel-station recommendations remain paid. Over 5 million downloads on Google Play, 4.8-star rating. Developed by Sygic in Bratislava. No country-specific localisation — the same app in Ireland, Brazil, Poland, India.

odo.ie

An all-in-one vehicle-ownership dashboard built specifically for Irish drivers. Web app (PWA) installable to any phone's home screen, runs everywhere a modern browser runs. Solo free forever for one vehicle, Family €4/mo for 3, Pro €8/mo for 10. Handles service tracking, fuel logging (L/100km + kWh/100km for EVs), running-cost analytics, and the Irish-specific piece: automatic reminders for NCT, motor tax and insurance with proper Irish logic (NCT rolls forward 2 years when you log a pass, or 1 year on 10+ year-old cars; motor tax rules across the three Irish regimes; insurance renewal tracking). A built-in NCT centres map for all 50 Irish centres. 70+ Irish-specific guides covering NCT, motor tax, insurance, VRT, driving tests, EV grants, and more — pairing tracking with local guidance. Built by Sprout Media Limited in Dublin.

Where Fuelio genuinely wins

Being fair about the competition: Fuelio has real advantages that odo.ie doesn't match.

  • GPS trip logging with GPX export — automatic distance tracking via your phone's GPS, route saved as GPX. odo.ie requires manual km entry per trip (even in the Pro trip logbook). For a power user who does lots of variable-route driving, Fuelio's auto-tracking is a real time saver
  • Crowdsourced fuel prices — see nearby stations and their prices contributed by the Fuelio community. Especially useful for long-distance drivers. odo.ie doesn't have this
  • Bi-fuel vehicle support — if you drive a petrol+LPG converted car (niche but significant in some Irish fleets), Fuelio handles two tanks on one vehicle natively. odo.ie treats a vehicle as single-fuel
  • Full-tank algorithm — Fuelio's consumption maths are tuned for accuracy on partial vs full fills. odo.ie's is simpler
  • Native Android widget — home-screen widget for quick log entry. odo.ie's PWA install gives you an app icon but no native widgets
  • Unlimited vehicles on free tier — Fuelio lets you add as many cars as you want for free. odo.ie caps free at 3 (Pro is 10, Fleet tier in development for unlimited)
  • Native app responsiveness — Android especially. The Fuelio interface is very polished on mobile
  • Mature fuel-specific analytics — by octane, by station, by refill pattern. Deeper than odo.ie's fuel analytics
  • Route planner premium — Fuelio's paid route-planning feature suggests cheapest-fuel routes. Valuable for commercial drivers or long-distance commuters

Where odo.ie wins for Irish drivers

Everything Fuelio doesn't do that matters to Irish car ownership:

  • NCT reminders with Irish logic — the 2-year / 1-year (10+) cycle is baked in. Log a pass and the next date rolls forward automatically. Fuelio has no concept of NCT
  • Motor tax tracking across all 3 Irish regimes — pre-2008 engine size, 2008–2020 NEDC CO2, 2021+ WLTP CO2. odo.ie knows which applies to your car. Fuelio doesn't model any of this
  • Irish insurance renewal cycle — annual renewals from a specific anniversary, 30/14/7/1-day advance alerts, tied to the specific vehicle. Fuelio has generic cost reminders that can't match this
  • NCT centres map — all 50 Irish test centres with addresses and directions. Fuelio has nothing equivalent
  • 65+ built-in Irish guides — the thing you're reading now is part of the product. Fuelio is a pure tool with no editorial / contextual content
  • .ics calendar sync — subscribe once to the private feed and every NCT / tax / insurance deadline appears in Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook with advance alerts. No app login required — both household partners see the same deadlines. Fuelio has no calendar sync
  • Morning email digest — daily digest only when something needs attention. Not a feature Fuelio offers
  • Service-history PDF designed for Irish resale — a documented service record commands €1,000–€2,000 premium on Irish used-car resale (see our depreciation guide). Fuelio's CSV export is less valuable at handover to a buyer
  • Irish-built, in Ireland, for Ireland — when Irish rules change (the driver-number rule in March 2025; speed limit changes from February 2025; motor tax band updates at Budget time), odo.ie updates. Fuelio doesn't know Irish rules exist
  • EU data residency — your car ownership data stays in an EU-region Postgres database. Fuelio uses Sygic's cloud infrastructure (Slovakia-based, also EU, but mixed with Sygic Maps usage data)
  • No ads, no data selling, no Google Analytics, no Facebook Pixel — explicit privacy commitments. Fuelio has no ads either, but Sygic's broader privacy posture covers navigation + location data across its product suite

The verdict

If you only need fuel tracking and don't drive in Ireland (or don't care about Irish compliance deadlines): Fuelio is excellent. It's the deeper tool on fuel specifically and free forever.

If you own a car in Ireland: odo.ie is the right call for most people. The deadline infrastructure (NCT, motor tax, insurance) is where missed renewals actually cost money, and that's the bit Fuelio doesn't do. odo.ie's fuel tracking is less deep than Fuelio's but still more than sufficient for 95% of Irish drivers.

If you're genuinely torn: start with odo.ie (free, takes 2 minutes to set up, no credit card). If after a month you find you want deeper fuel analytics, add Fuelio as a fuel-only companion. Odds are high you won't bother.

The honest ad-reader test

Both apps are ad-free and genuinely free on their core tiers — neither is trying to monetise by serving you ads or selling data. Fuelio is free because Sygic's commercial interest is in navigation (Sygic Maps) not vehicle tracking. odo.ie has a three-tier ladder: Solo free for 1 vehicle, Family €4/month (or €3/month billed yearly) for 3 vehicles with co-driver sharing, Pro €8/month (or €6/month billed yearly) for 10 vehicles with the Revenue-ready trip logbook. Neither is a trap; both are sustainable business models. Choose the one whose feature set matches your life.

Fuelio tracks your fuel brilliantly. odo.ie makes sure you never miss an Irish deadline.

Add your car to odo.ie in 30 seconds — reg, make, next NCT date, motor tax expiry, insurance renewal. odo.ie handles the reminders from there. Solo free forever for one vehicle, Family €4/mo for 3, no credit card on Solo, no app-store download. Runs alongside Fuelio if you want both. PWA installs to your phone home screen.
