The Best Free Car Maintenance Tracker for Irish Drivers

Most car-maintenance apps are built for California or London. They're fine for logging an oil change, but they don't know what the NCT is, when your motor tax expires in Ireland, or that your insurance renewal cycle runs a year at a time from a specific anniversary. odo.ie is built in Dublin for Irish drivers: NCT reminders that know the 2-year and 1-year cycles, motor tax tracking across all three Irish tax regimes, and a built-in library of Irish guides right alongside the tracker. Free, no ads, no data selling.

TL;DR

Seven apps reviewed honestly. odo.ie — #1 for Irish drivers (Irish-built PWA with native NCT / motor tax / insurance reminders, 77+ Irish guides; Solo free / Family €4/mo / Pro €8/mo with Revenue-ready trip logbook). Fuelio — best for fuel purists (ad-free, multi-fuel, crowdsourced prices). Simply Auto— best for GPS mileage + octane-specific fuel economy. CARFAX Car Care — best for US drivers with CARFAX service history. MyAutoLog — best iOS design (iPhone only). Drivvo — best for multi-fuel + ride-share + equipment hours. AUTOsist — best for receipt OCR and US SMB fleets. For Irish drivers, the deciding feature is Irish NCT / tax / insurance cycle awareness, which only odo.ie does.

The Irish tracking problem

If you drive in Ireland, your car doesn't come with one set of deadlines — it comes with five, all on different calendars:

  • Motor tax — annually, half-yearly or quarterly, expiring on the last day of a month
  • NCT — every 2 years, shifting to annually once the car is 10+ years old
  • Insurance — annually, from your specific renewal anniversary
  • Scheduled services — typically every 12 months or ~15,000 km (our service frequency guide covers this), whichever comes first
  • Wearing parts — tyres (every 40,000–80,000 km), battery (3–5 years), wipers (yearly), brake pads (~50,000 km)

Multiply that across 2 or 3 household vehicles — a family car, a commuter, maybe a teenager's first car — and it's no surprise most Irish drivers keep some of this in their head, some on paper, some in a email folder marked "car" that they never open, and some nowhere at all. Miss one and the cost can be real: motor tax arrears at 1/10 the annual rate per month (see our motor tax arrearsguide), an expired NCT that blocks your next tax renewal, a lapsed insurance that's a 5-penalty-point offence.

Why generic global apps fall short for Irish drivers

There are some solid global car-maintenance apps — Fuelio, Simply Auto, CARFAX Car Care, MyAutoLog, Drivvo and AUTOsist. They do the core log well (and we give each one a fair review below). But every one of them is built with a US or UK driver in mind, and the gap shows:

  • No NCT awareness. Nobody outside Ireland tests cars on the NCT's specific cycle. You'd set a custom reminder and hope you remember the rule
  • No Irish motor tax cycle. Ireland has three parallel tax regimes — pre-2008 engine size, 2008–2020 NEDC CO2, 2021+ WLTP CO2 — none of which a generic app models
  • No Irish insurance conventions. Irish renewals run annually from a specific anniversary; no quarter/half-yearly policies; no 6-month US-style terms
  • No penalty-points awareness. Our penalty points guide lists Irish-specific offences; a global app doesn't know which car-related penalties exist in Ireland
  • No content in context. When you're logging a service, you don't have Irish guidance at hand for what typical service costs should be, when an NCT is next due, or what a given dashboard warning light means in an Irish NCT context
  • No Irish-market maps. An NCT centre map requires the specific 50 NCTS locations around Ireland — not a generic "find a garage" lookup

The result is that generic apps work — but you fight them. Every reminder becomes custom. Every deadline becomes manual. Every number becomes a research tab.

What odo.ie does differently

odo.ie is designed start-to-end for the Irish driver. The difference shows in a dozen small details:

  • Native Irish deadlines — NCT, motor tax and insurance as first-class objects with Irish-specific reminder logic, not "custom reminders"
  • Auto-rolling NCT — log a pass on the correct date, and the next due date rolls forward 2 years (or 1 year if the car is 10+)
  • Motor tax band calculation hints built into vehicle set-up — we know which regime applies based on first-reg date
  • .ics calendar feed that exports 30/14/7/1-day reminders to Google, Apple or Outlook so the alarms fit your existing life, not a separate app
  • Live NCT centres map with all 50 Irish test centres, searchable by county and town
  • Running-cost analytics — monthly spend chart, trailing 12-month average and year-end forecast — all in euro, using Irish price contexts
  • Built-in Irish guides library — 77+ guides covering NCT, motor tax, VRT, insurance, EV charging, importing from the UK, driving test and more
  • PWA install — home-screen on iPhone / Android / Mac / Windows without going through an app store

Family and Pro tiers

The free Solo tier covers one vehicle forever — enough for most single-car drivers. Family and Pro scale up from there:

  • Family — €4/month, or €3/month billed yearly: up to 3 vehicles with co-driver sharing. Natural fit for most Irish households (main car, commuter car, teenager's first car)
  • Pro — €8/month, or €6/month billed yearly: up to 10 vehicles plus the Revenue-ready trip logbook (Business / Commute / Private categorisation, tax-period PDFs, accountant-ready CSVs with VAT columns), advanced analytics, branded service-book PDFs, priority support, early access to new features

Every tier includes NCT / motor tax / insurance reminders, service tracking, fuel logging, cost analytics, calendar sync, NCT centres map and receipts / document attachments (with storage quotas scaling by plan: Solo 50 MB, Family 150 MB, Pro 500 MB). No OCR in the receipts v1 — structured free-text labels instead. Pricing is transparent onodo.ie/pro.

Best car maintenance apps reviewed — the 2026 shortlist

Hundreds of apps compete for the "car maintenance" search term. Most are abandoned, ad-farms, or white-labels of other apps. We narrowed to seven based on active maintenance, meaningful user base, a clear distinct job, a genuine free tier, and accessibility to Irish users. Business-mileage specialists (MileIQ, TripLog, Driversnote) are excluded — they solve a narrower problem and we've covered them in dedicated head-to-head articles.

1. odo.ie — best for Irish drivers

Platform: PWA (iOS / Android / Mac / Windows / Linux). Price: Solo free / Family €4/month (€3/month billed yearly) / Pro €8/month (€6/month billed yearly). Irish-built specifically for Irish drivers. The only app in this shortlist that understands NCT cycle logic (2-yearly under 10, annual from 10+), motor tax across all three regimes (pre-July 2008 engine-cc, 2008–2020 NEDC CO2, 2021+ WLTP CO2), Irish insurance renewals with driver-number-rule awareness since 31 March 2025, and an NCT centres map covering all 50 test centres. Free Solo tier covers 1 vehicle with service, fuel, cost analytics, receipts up to 50 MB, .ics calendar sync and the full reminder stack. Family (€4/mo) adds 3 vehicles plus co-driver sharing. Pro (€8/mo) adds 10 vehicles plus the Revenue-ready trip logbook (banded civil service rates), tax-period PDFs and a professional service-history PDF designed for Irish resale premium. EU data residency, no ads, no tracking pixels. Where it wins: the only app that fits the Irish compliance stack end-to-end. Where it doesn't: no automatic GPS mileage (manual by design for zero battery drain), no OCR receipts in v1.

2. Fuelio — best for fuel tracking purists

Platform: Android-first, iOS. Price: free, ad-free (since Sygic's 2015 acquisition). 5M+ Google Play downloads, 4.8-star rating, developed by Sygic in Bratislava. Multi-fuel support including bi-fuel petrol + LPG, GPS trip logging with GPX export, crowdsourced fuel prices from the community, a full-tank consumption algorithm, and a home-screen Android widget. Unlimited free vehicles. No NCT / motor tax / insurance awareness — not its job. Where it wins: multi-fuel depth, GPS + GPX, crowdsourced prices, ad-free, unlimited vehicles free. Where it doesn't: no service-history PDF for resale, no Irish compliance, Android-first feature set with iOS catching up.

3. Simply Auto — best for mileage + octane-specific fuel economy

Platform: Android, iOS. Price: freemium, premium ~$5.99/month. US-oriented with one unusual feature: octane-specific fuel-economy benchmarking (L/100km on 95 vs 98 RON in Europe, 91 vs 93 octane in the US). Premium unlocks automatic GPS mileage tracking with background learning and auto-classification, cross-device sync, advanced reporting, and ad removal. Reports are tuned for US IRS Schedule C / Form 2106 deductions — a flat cents-per-mile model that doesn't map onto the Irish Revenue civil service banded structure. Strong EV kWh support. Where it wins: automatic GPS, octane benchmarking (rare), US tax report format, EV support. Where it doesn't: no Irish NCT / tax / insurance, US-flat mileage rate won't work for Irish Revenue claims, cross-device sync is premium-only.

4. CARFAX Car Care — best for US drivers

Platform: Android, iOS. Price: free (ad-supported, upsells to CARFAX Vehicle History paid report). The consumer companion to CARFAX, the dominant US vehicle history database. Party trick: auto-import of service records for US-registered vehicles from the CARFAX service-history network — garages, dealers and service centres that report work into CARFAX will show up automatically. Excellent for a US driver in the CARFAX ecosystem. Limited value outside the US because the service-history import depends on the CARFAX network (primarily US + Canada). Irish drivers would use it manually, which duplicates what simpler tools do better. Where it wins: auto-imported US service history, CARFAX Vehicle History integration, established US brand trust. Where it doesn't:auto-import doesn't work in Ireland; no Irish compliance; ads.

5. MyAutoLog — best iOS design

Platform: iOS-only (Android waitlisted with no confirmed release as of April 2026). Price: free for 1 vehicle; premium subscription for unlimited. Widely cited as the best-designed car maintenance tracker on the App Store — native iOS polish, tactile animations, document / receipt / invoice attachments on service entries, MPG-focused fuel insight dashboards, smart date-or-mileage reminders, PDF export for service-history books, and iCloud sync across iOS devices on premium. If you have one iPhone, one car, and care about design polish, it's a beautiful app. The iOS-only limitation rules it out for mixed-platform households. Where it wins: iOS design polish, document attachments today, mature App Store ratings, iOS notifications and widgets. Where it doesn't: iOS-only, single-vehicle free tier, no Irish compliance, iCloud sync gated behind premium AND only between iOS devices.

6. Drivvo — best for simple multi-vehicle + multi-fuel

Platform: Android, iOS, web.drivvo.com. Price: free with ads; premium unlocks cloud sync / ad removal / CSV export; Fleet tier live for business. Developed in São Paulo by Cristian Cardoso Desenvolvimento with 5M+ Google Play downloads and a 4.5-star rating. Strengths: multi-fuel support (petrol, diesel, LPG, CNG, electric), income tracking for ride-share and delivery drivers (Uber, Bolt, FreeNow, Deliveroo), hour-meter tracking for equipment and tractors, and a live Fleet tier with 15-day trial. Accepts data import from aCar / Fuelio / Fuel Manager. Polished mobile app, international language and currency support. Where it wins: multi-fuel, ride-share income tracking, hour-meter for equipment, live Fleet tier, data import from other apps. Where it doesn't: no Irish NCT / tax / insurance, CSV / Excel export is premium-only, free tier has ads.

7. AUTOsist — best for receipt scanning and US SMB fleets

Platform: Android, iOS, web. Price: free limited tier; paid tiers for fleet / business features. Started as a consumer receipt-scanning and service-logging mobile app and grew into a US small-business fleet management platform. Forbes Advisor "Best Overall Fleet Management Software" 2022–2024. Hero feature: mobile receipt scanning with OCR — snap a photo of a garage invoice or fuel receipt and AUTOsist extracts the key fields. Preventative maintenance scheduling, digital inspection forms, work orders, parts inventory, GPS tracking and dash-camera integration on fleet tier, multi-user permissions. US customer base includes ServPro and Menards. Where it wins: mobile receipt OCR (category-leading), work orders, digital inspection forms, multi-user permissions, US SMB fleet credentials. Where it doesn't: over-engineered for solo Irish owners, no Irish compliance, US hosting.

The point isn't that global apps are bad — they're excellent at their specific jobs. It's that they're generic. If you live in Ireland, you pay Irish motor tax, test at an Irish NCT centre, drive on Irish roads with Irish-specific rules. An app that understands that saves you the cognitive load of translating every reminder.

Run more than one if it helps

There's no rule against using two apps for two jobs. A common Irish pattern: odo.ie for NCT / motor tax / insurance / service / receipts, and Fuelio alongside for deeper fuel-price analytics when that matters to you. Both have free tiers, neither locks you in, and both export data.

Who odo.ie is built for

  • The single-car household — you've got one car, you want to stop missing NCT / tax / insurance dates, and you want a digital service logbook that boosts resale value when you sell
  • The two-or-three-car household — family car, commuter, teenager's first car. Three different NCT dates, three different insurance renewals, three different service schedules — all in one dashboard
  • The used-car buyer — you just bought a used car and want to establish a clean ownership history from today onward
  • The PCP / lease driver — you want to track running costs to know whether to buy the balloon at the end of the term
  • The first-time driver — you've just passed your test (see our passed-your-test guide) and want to start driving ownership habits right
  • The EV driver — you want kWh/100km tracking, home-charging cost logging, and range/efficiency analytics over time
  • The business-mileage claimant — you need a tax-ready trip logbook for Revenue-compliant mileage claims (Pro tier will extend this)
  • The returning emigrant — you've moved back to Ireland, imported a car, and want a local-aware tool to re-learn the Irish system
