- Rules bible — Towing a Caravan or Trailer Ireland: BE when trailer MAM >750 kg and combined MAM >3,500 kg; 80 km/h always when towing; mirrors past the trailer; breakaway cable on braked trailers; nose weight typically ~5–7% of loaded trailer (or per manufacturer).
- #1 Škoda Kodiaq 2.0 TDI 200 4×4 — 2,500 kg braked; best Irish all-round tow SUV (~€56,500 TDI band / from ~€44k entry MHEV).
- #2 Sorento 2.2 diesel — also 2,500 kg; Santa Fe HEV sister ~1,650 kg (no diesel). PHEV Sorento ~1,500 kg.
- #3–4 Tiguan / Q5 TDI — 2,400 kg braked; five-seat premium mid. eHybrid / TFSI often drop to 2,000 kg.
- #5 BMW X5 — 2,700 kg (50e) · up to ~3,500 kg on some ICE; from €101,930 — capacity champ, not value champ.
- #6 Enyaq 85 — up to 2,000 kg (RS 2,200); Selection 60 only 1,000 kg. Best mainstream EV tow angle.
- #7–8 Tucson / Sportage HEV 1,650 kg · RAV4 HEV 1,500–1,650 kg — fine for lighter trailers; thin margin for laden touring vans.
- Decision: touring caravan / horsebox → Kodiaq TDI 200 or Sorento diesel. Premium five-seat → Tiguan / Q5 TDI. Budget secondary + max kg → X5. EV + home charge → Enyaq 85. Jetski / light trailer → Tucson / Sportage / RAV4.
How we ranked
Primary: published braked tow rating from manufacturer Irish / EU specs used elsewhere on odo.ie. Then stability cues (AWD where it matters, kerb weight vs trailer), gearbox / cooling honesty for Irish hills and 80 km/h motorway runs, and dealer reach for towbar fitting plus DSG / diesel / HV service. Motor tax and company-car BIK are real ownership costs — they do not outrank a car that cannot legally pull your trailer.
Distinct from Best 7-Seaters (third-row space), Best Mid-Size SUVs (sales-default family class) and Best Rural Roads (hedgerows / frost). Those pages mention towing; this one ranks it.
The 8 picks ranked
Braked kg below are the figures we publish in model briefs and comparisons as of April–August 2026. Always confirm the exact trim sheet and VRC O.1 before you hitch. Related reviews: Kodiaq, Tiguan, Q5, X5, Enyaq, Tucson, Sportage, RAV4.
Škoda Kodiaq 2.0 TDI 200 4×4
Irish tow king — 2,500 kg braked- Powertrain
- Braked tow 2,500 kg (TDI 200 4×4) · 2,300 kg (TDI 150) · 2,000 kg (1.5 TSI MHEV / PHEV iV)
- Real-world fuel
- TDI ~6.0–6.5 L/100 km · motor tax ~€220 Band C2 on many TDIs
The default Irish caravan / horsebox SUV: class-leading 2,500 kg on the 2.0 TDI 200 4×4, MQB Evo / 7-DSG with a known 60,000 km oil service, optional seven seats, 845 L five-seat boot, and Skoda dealers in every county. Cheaper than Santa Fe / Sorento money for serious diesel tow capacity. Full brief: Skoda Kodiaq Ireland.
Buy the TDI 200 4×4 for the 2,500 kg claim — MHEV and PHEV drop to 2,000 kg. DSG service is non-negotiable. Third row is kids-first vs Santa Fe. ~4.76 m is wide on single-track. Overkill if you only pull a jetski trailer — see Tucson / Sportage.
Kia Sorento / Hyundai Santa Fe
2,500 kg diesel (Sorento) · HEV honesty ~1,650 kg- Powertrain
- Braked tow ~2,500 kg (Sorento 2.2 diesel) · ~1,650 kg (Santa Fe / Sorento HEV) · ~1,500 kg (Sorento PHEV)
- Real-world fuel
- Diesel ~6.5 L/100 km · HEV ~6.0–7.5 · PHEV use-dependent
When towing and adult-friendly third-row seats share the week. Sorento 2.2 diesel is the only current Irish 7-seater in this pair that still matches Kodiaq’s 2,500 kg braked claim and keeps Kia’s 7-year transferable warranty. Santa Fe wins space and interior theatre but is hybrid-only in Ireland — treat ~1,650 kg HEV as the real figure, not diesel twin marketing from other markets. Lives properly in Best 7-Seaters.
Powertrain honesty: Santa Fe has no diesel; Sorento PHEV falls to ~1,500 kg. Confirm trim-sheet kg before you order. 4.8 m+ length bites Dublin parking. Heavier kerb weight = dearer tyres and brakes when towing weekly.
Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI
2,400 kg braked — 5-seat MQB Evo tow tool- Powertrain
- Braked tow 2,400 kg (2.0 TDI / 2.0 TSI 4Motion) · 2,000 kg (1.5 eTSI / eHybrid)
- Real-world fuel
- TDI ~5.5 L/100 km motorway · eTSI 6.5–7.5 · tax ~€210–€220 ICE / ~€140 eHybrid
Five-seat families who want near-Kodiaq tow ratings without seven seats or Skoda badge. 2.0 TDI (and 2.0 TSI 4Motion) hit 2,400 kg braked; VW dealer network and residual strength help ownership. Same DSG service rule as Kodiaq. Cross-shop Tiguan vs Kodiaq if seats vs tow is the fork.
eHybrid drops to 2,000 kg — do not buy PHEV for max tow. 5-seat only (Allspace retired). List price premium over Kodiaq for less space. DSG 60,000 km oil change essential.
Audi Q5 40 TDI
Premium mid — 2,400 kg on TDI- Powertrain
- Braked tow 2,400 kg (TDI 12%) · 2,000 kg (TFSI / e-hybrid)
- Real-world fuel
- TDI ~6.0–7.0 L/100 km · tax from ~€420 TDI · e-hybrid from ~€150
Buyers who want Audi polish, quattro credibility and a 2,400 kg TDI tow rating without jumping to X5 money. e-hybrid undercuts TDI on sticker and tax if you plug in — but tow drops to 2,000 kg. High-mileage caravan private buyers: price the 40 TDI first.
€70k–€85k ROTR before packs. TDI motor tax hurts vs e-hybrid. TFSI / e-hybrid are the wrong powertrains if braked kg is the brief. Service and 20–21" tyre bills are premium-mid reality.
BMW X5
Capacity champ — 2,700–~3,500 kg · €100k+- Powertrain
- Braked tow ~2,700 kg (50e typical) · up to ~3,500 kg (some ICE — confirm build sheet)
- Real-world fuel
- PHEV use-dependent · diesel 30d/40d high-mileage · tax €140–€790+ band-dependent
When maximum published braked capacity and air-suspension composure matter more than purchase price. 50e still tows ~2,700 kg with company-car BIK maths; some ICE configs claim toward ~3,500 kg. Adaptive air (standard on 50e) helps nose-weight and laden ride. Irish BMW dealer density supports towbar / service.
Wrong car if you wanted Kodiaq value. Diesels sit Category E BIK with no €10k OMV cut. Confirm exact O.1 / brochure kg per VIN — “up to ~3,500 kg” is not a blank cheque for every Irish X5. Not a Q5-size SUV.
Škoda Enyaq 85
EV tow angle — up to 2,000 kg braked- Battery
- 82 / 77 kWh (85) · 61 / 58 kWh (60)
- Range
- Braked tow 2,000 kg (85/85X) · 2,200 kg (RS) · 1,000 kg (60)
- Powertrain
- MEB RWD / 85X AWD · 165 kW DC · heat pump €1,271 option
- Real-world Irish efficiency
- ~14–18 kWh/100 km solo · towing collapses range — plan 80 km/h + DC
The honest mainstream EV tow pick in Ireland: Selection 85 / 85X up to 2,000 kg braked (RS 2,200) per August 2026 Skoda tech data — rare in the mid-€40k–€50k BEV band. Skoda dealers everywhere; €120 motor tax. Buy only with home charging and a trailer inside the claim with margin.
Selection 60 is only 1,000 kg — wrong EV for caravans. Towing range is brutal; county DC is patchy. SEAI cliff after July 2026 often zeros the grant on 85+. Still need BE / mirrors / nose weight like any tow car.
Hyundai Tucson / Kia Sportage
Volume mid-size — 1,650 kg HEV braked- Powertrain
- Braked tow 1,650 kg (HEV) · PHEV trim-sheet often lower — confirm before order
- Real-world fuel
- HEV 6.5–8.0 L/100 km · tax ~€210 · PHEV ~€140
Ireland’s default family SUVs when the trailer is light-to-medium: jetski, garden, small braked box, or a compact caravan with real weight discipline. Same N3 platform — Sportage for 7-year warranty, Tucson for SIMI #1 liquidity. Deep dealer coverage for towbar fitting.
1,650 kg leaves thin margin vs a laden touring van that Kodiaq / Sorento diesel clear easily. No current diesel. PHEV AWD may cut tow vs HEV — verify the sheet. Not the horsebox default.
Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
Toyota residuals — 1,500–1,650 kg braked- Powertrain
- Braked tow 1,500–1,650 kg HEV depending on config · confirm VRC O.1
- Real-world fuel
- HEV 6.0–6.5 L/100 km · tax ~€220 Band C1
Buyers who want Toyota Relax / residual strength and occasional light-to-medium towing rather than max kg. e-CVT is fine for modest trailers; used 5th-gen AWD helps launch traction on wet ramps. Cross-shop vs Tucson if price matters more than badge.
Not a 2,400–2,500 kg tool. New Irish HEV is FWD-only — AWD means used 5th-gen or waiting on PHEV. Config-dependent 1,500 vs 1,650 kg — do not assume the top figure. Leave margin for passengers and fuel.
PHEV / EV tow caveats
- Lower braked ratings are normal — battery mass and thermal maps cut kg vs diesel twins (Kodiaq / Tiguan / Q5 / Sorento examples above).
- Range while towing — expect a large hit at a legal 80 km/h; Enyaq and ID.4-class EVs need planned DC stops, not brochure solo range.
- Transmission cooling — long alpine-style climbs with a van heat DSGs and e-axles; respect manufacturer tow modes and coolant warnings.
- BIK temptation — a PHEV can win company-car maths and still be the wrong tow car if O.1 is 1,500–2,000 kg and your van is heavier.
- ID.4 / EV6 / Model Y — useful EV tow footnotes (often ~1,200–1,800 kg class) but not this shortlist’s top tools; see Best EVs Ireland.
BE licence & combined MAM reminder
Category BE is required when both are true: trailer MAM >750 kg and combined vehicle + trailer MAM >3,500 kg. A big SUV does not exempt you — it often makes BE morelikely because vehicle MAM is higher. Category B still covers light trailers (≤750 kg) or combinations that stay ≤3,500 kg combined.
- Read VRC O.1 / O.2 (braked / unbraked max) and F.1 / F.2 (vehicle MAM)
- 80 km/h whenever towing — every road class
- Towing mirrors that show past the trailer width
- Breakaway cable on braked trailers; safety chain on many unbraked
- Nose weight — typically ~5–7% of loaded trailer mass, or as the car / hitch maker specifies
Full legal + practical walkthrough: Towing a Caravan or Trailer Ireland. This page only shortlists the cars.
Decision — caravan vs horsebox vs jetski trailer
- Touring caravan (laden, regular): Kodiaq 2.0 TDI 200 4×4 or Sorento 2.2 diesel — then Tiguan / Q5 TDI if five seats only. Read the towing guide before the brochure.
- Horsebox / large braked trailer: same 2,500 kg diesel shortlist; budget secondary → X5 for capacity / air suspension. Confirm box MAM + nose weight, not just empty weight.
- Jetski / garden / light braked box: Tucson / Sportage or RAV4 HEV at 1,500–1,650 kg is usually enough — do not over-buy Kodiaq diesel unless you will use the margin.
- Want an EV: Enyaq 85 / 85X (2,000 kg) with home charge; skip Selection 60 for tow work.
- Need seven adult-friendly seats + tow: Sorento diesel first, Santa Fe HEV only if 1,650 kg is enough — see Best 7-Seaters.
- Rural lanes + occasional trailer: still pick on braked kg first, then width — Best Rural Roads · Best Mid-Size SUVs.
Honourable mentions
- Land Rover Defender 130 — farm / off-road tow tool when you need it; from ~€112,995 in our 7-seaters brief. Confirm Irish build-sheet braked kg (not a single published figure in that guide). Awkward on village streets; ownership costs in another league.
- VW Tayron TDI 4Motion — up to 2,500 kg on TDI 4Motion in the 7-seaters guide; MQB Evo sister to Kodiaq with VW badge premium.
- Kia EV9 GT-Line AWD — up to 2,500 kg braked vs ~900 kg Earth RWD; serious EV capacity at EV9 money.
- BMW X3 — typical ~2,000 kg (30e) · up to ~2,400 kg on some ICE; smaller than X5 if you do not need the large SAV.
- Mazda CX-60 diesel — driver's diesel for high-mileage tow in mid-size round-ups; confirm current Irish braked kg on the trim sheet before ordering.
Track the tow car — and the trailer — in odo.ie
Log service, NCT, insurance and tyre dates on the tow vehicle. Add the caravan or trailer as a second vehicle so breakaway-cable checks and axle service do not live only in your head.
