A car has two chapters: everything that happened to it before you took delivery, and everything that happens while it's yours. Those chapters need different tools because they're fundamentally different problems:

• The "before" problem — you weren't there, you can't verify what the seller tells you, and the data you need lives in databases (NVDF, DVLA, insurance, finance registers) consumer apps can't access directly. You need someone licensed to pull that data once and hand you a report.
• The "after" problem — you're there every day, you know every fill-up and service, and the data you need is structured day-to-day logging plus Irish-specific reminders (NCT cycle, three motor tax regimes, insurance renewal with driver-number rule).

What Motorcheck does

Motorcheck (motorcheck.ie) is one of the two established Irish car history-check services. You enter an Irish or UK registration number, pay for a report, and receive a PDF covering the car's full pre-purchase history.

• Full Check — €35 single, or €45 for a 3-pack (€15 each — useful when viewing multiple cars). The comprehensive report.
• History Check — €20 single, €30 for a 3-pack (€10 each). Narrower focus.
• Finance Check — €15 single, €24 for a 3-pack.
• Valuation Check — €8 single, €12 for a 3-pack.

The Full Check covers:

• Vehicle identity — make, model, engine, first registration, colour, spec match to VIN
• Finance check — outstanding HP, PCP or other finance that would transfer to you with the car
• Write-off check — insurance write-off category (Cat A / B / C / D / N / S) and repair history
• Mileage verification — every odometer reading on record, looking for backward steps ("clocking" — see our car clocking in Ireland guide)
• Stolen-vehicle check — against Garda and Interpol databases
• Full UK & NI history — MOT history, UK keeper count, UK mileage trail. Critical for imports
• Previous-usage check — was it a taxi / rental / fleet vehicle, which affects wear and value
• Road tax & NCT history — was the car kept tax-compliant and NCT-compliant up to the report date
• Market valuation — typical trade and retail Irish market price for the spec

What odo.ie does

odo.ie is an Irish-built PWA that takes over the day the car is yours. Everything the dealer system or manufacturer portal doesn't cover, odo.ie handles:

How to use them together

The practical workflow for an Irish used-car buyer:

1. Shortlist 3–5 cars from DoneDeal, Carzone or a local dealer.

3. View the surviving candidates in person with the Motorcheck report in hand — check the car's spec and odometer reading against the report.
4. Buy, do VRT / NCT / insurance / motor tax / change-of-ownership as applicable (new-to-Ireland checklist covers the full process for imports).
5. Open odo.ie the day the keys are yours. Add the vehicle (~30 seconds). Enter the NCT / motor tax / insurance dates from the Motorcheck report — odo.ie takes over reminders from there.
6. Attach the Motorcheck PDF to the vehicle in odo.ie as a permanent purchase-date snapshot. Storage is plenty (50 MB on the free Solo tier covers many PDFs).
7. Log every service, fuel fill-up and receipt in odo.ie from day one. In 5 years, your service-history PDF will be the premium-resale document.

Motorcheck vs Cartell — which history-check service?

Ireland has two dominant history-check providers: Motorcheck and Cartell. Both draw from similar underlying data sources (NVDF, DVLA, insurance databases, finance registers), both cover Irish and UK / NI registrations, both offer single reports and bundle packs at broadly similar prices. Which one to use is mostly a preference call on UX and report layout.

What matters more than choosing between them is runningone of them before you buy. Both are legitimate, both are widely accepted, both will save you from expensive purchase mistakes. Neither replaces odo.ie for ongoing management — they're the pre-purchase tool; odo.ie is the post-purchase tool.
